And yes, after you get three bee pollen for the Mayor of Selbina, Gilgamesh tells you someone is looking for you in Norg and you get a free ride there. Make sure to use the homepoint crystals for ez teleports.

And just an update on easyness of leveling, yesterday night I got from 24 - > 41 farming in Qufim, Yhutunga Jungle, Yhoator Jungle, and doing two sets of GoVs in Crawler's Nest before logging.

sparks of eminence is the currency to buy gear isnt ? , gil is useless atm all the gear is rare/ex , and with the currency u can buy low lvl gear to keep u going , no need to buy from AH , and even then is cheap as hell nowdays

From all I've heard, FFXI is what I wanted from a online FF and that FFXIV could not deliver.

How long until FFXI is closed and I can't play anymore, if I begin today?
Will I be able to experience the game fully with that time?

I ended up on Asura (debating between bahamut and Asura but went Asura)!

Yes now that I'm in it's much clearer! Got all my npc and things are smooth as hot knife through butter.

Spent a fair bit of time just listening to music and it's fantastic! It's adventures all over again without the waiting time for party.

Just need to gear up a little because I'm still in starting gear and I have no gils x.x

Welcome to Asura (that's my server as well)! Also, it's the unofficial Reddit server, so it's one of the more populated ones still. If you don't currently read the XI subreddit, I'd recommend taking a peek over there. It's easy to forget how massive and intricate XI is. Throw in all the changes and it can be a bit overwhelming. They're a helpful bunch over there

There's no way to tell, but I think XI servers are going to still be up for a long while. They did just wrap up the end of their official story, but I don't see them closing up shop anytime soon.

I don't think you'd have much trouble experiencing the game. If you are brand new to XI, it may be a little rough when you first land. You literally get dropped into town, with a voucher for 50g. No real instruction, no !'s all over the place to indicate where quests are, and you may question your sanity for deciding to pick up the game at all. lol. But I do think you'd enjoy it once you start to explore and get your feet wet. Graphics are obviously outdated, but it has a great story, and there is an amazing depth to it that XIV will never have.

Yes, Sparks from Records of Eminence is used to buy gear (both weapons and equipment) as well as skill up books because you can end up leveling faster than your combat skills level (had to buy 3 stacks of katana books cause of this).

The game itself isn't shutting down, they are closing the final story chapter of the game: Rhapsodies of Vana'diel. I was able to get to level 41 in 3 nights (4-5h of playtime each), so you can get a sense of the speed of leveling (lvl 99 is the cap). I am not sure how long each mission set will take but no real need to rush it (Shadow Lord, Zilart, Chains, etc). Like Skivvy said, Asura is a good server choice due to the Reddit community there than can help.

However, a bunch of promotional ingame events that are going on right now will be ending soon (though may come back next year).

It still has a lot to offer. Yes, it's changed drastically from how it used to be, but a lot of that is for the best. Despite for playing for 4+ years back in its "glory days", I had a great time when I made a new character.

Agreed. It can still give people an idea of how it was before. All it takes is thinking about how the players they interact with now would be in that game, minus any form of DF lol. The current version of XI can be somewhat comparable to how 1.0 was to 2.0 XIV. 1.0 is long gone, just as old XI is. Although, XI's reason is just because of the lack of players to do things the old ways if people want to. I do have to say though, the archaic MMORPG setup really doesn't age very well lol.

It probably aged better than what FFXIV will. We're still on the second year of the game and on ilv210 gear. In 8 more years, we're probably sitting at ilv1500 with nothing to do.

As much as a wish for my HS days when lvl 75 was cap and Midgardsormr still existed with a good population, I'll take what I can get. TBH the game still has a lot of content (since it's age) which has a lot more depth than XIV has right now. I haven't been this giddy with excitement to play an MMO in a long while and something to do after being burned out and unmotivated to play XIV.

Mihli instantly removes debuffs/DoTs faster than I've seen Kupipi do it, but Apururu has bigger cures / curaga V and near infinite mp with Nott.
