Yes, the reason I loved RPGs back during the NES/SNES/PSX era was because everything else was so bad. Where do you people come up with this crap? There are actually people out there who like something because they think it's good not because everything else is inferior.

I've never liked action/shooter games and that didn't change with the times.

I shudder to say it, but I completely agreee with Beetleljuice.

RPGs are merely a historical progression of MUDs and pen-paper RPGs where mathematical equations substituted for real-time action. Now that technology has advanced to accommodate a more "realistic" experience, is it no wonder many people shun these antiquated relics from the dinosaur era?

Be honest, the only reason people still play Risk is because they don't have access to Call of Duty.

Outside of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, I'm not interested in any of Square Enix's future offerings.

It was good for it's time, sure, because nothing better was out there.

Then games evolved, and technology evolved. Suddenly everything is better than what was once considered "good" action gameplay.

And some people like the new Star Wars trilogy too. Nothing wrong with that.

    Also in after denial.

The only reason "RPG's" saw any kind of success in the S/NES/PS1 era was due to other genres being so godawfully BAD. Mainly action games. In essence "RPG's" are merely action games with simple gameplay mechanics, so of course they worked rather well for what the hardware could accomplish back then.

Alas, in PS2 and PS3 era action games have come back with a force of thousand suns (with games like DMC, MGS4 and Bayonetta). and as soon as that happened, RPG's became instantly inferior (not all, but most). SE is doing exactly what it should- turning the "RPG's" into what they really are- long cutscene-driven action games. The gameplay is not yet on a sufficient level, but it sure as hell is closer.

It's sad they didn't realize it by the time X was being made.

    ib4 denial.

Exactly! Which probably contributes to my enjoyment of XIII so much.

Theatrythm Final Fantasy - Is this indicative of your quality going forward, Square Enix?

You've been largely absent this generation and I'm starting to think it's for the best.

Who is in denial? The fact is that a good portion of genres are now using very RPG like elements. Red Dead Redemption has gear changes that effect abilities, upgrades to abilities by mastering certain skills. Call of Duty has an XP system, weapon upgrades and customization only seen in RPGs a decade ago. Need for Speed Shift has an XP and progression system... and even Zelda is now adding more RPG elements this fall.

I would say that RPGs are at a plateau... a very... long and wide plateau, not that they "were" good only because other genres "were" bad, that sounds cheap, but that they were ahead of the curve and need to strive for excellence again.

Theatrythm has a very nice responses so far, Rythm games is always fun, it attracts casuals and people that wants to nostalgia, they can even expand is very easily to arcades, more cash cows to them.

I'll take theatrhythm over chocobo racing.

Take what's 'good', do it better. Ignore the bad, do it thousand times better.

That's exactly what I'm saying. Other genres flew by in a matter of years. Now they need to catch up.
