Great post Sapphidia. Totally agree with your thoughts on the current situation with Paladins in Alexander Savage.1 - Currently the top end raiding content is HARD. That is, you have to get 8 players together in a balanced composition and play your classes pretty much perfectly to have any hope of getting down Alex Savage bosses before you start to overgear them from gear obtained from esoterics. This is the point where you're no longer just talking about one class beign slightly better than another. You're talking about bosses literally NOT BEING POSSIBLE with a certain lineup. There's many many precedents in this expansion of players being FORCED to swap away from Paladin, their preferred/favorite class, into Warrior or Dark Knight simply so their group can actually have a hope in hell of killing a boss due to the class balance...
Are paladins fine and capable and fun in every single encounter in the game outside of Alex Savage? Yep. Are they objectively worse than the other two tanks in terms of the raid requirements on at least 3 of the encounters inside Alex Savage? Yes. That's the issue. The solution might be paladin buffs. It might also be no change to the class but a change in the focus of what's important in the next raid tier. It might be that the next part of Alex Savage comes out and it's all balanced around physical tankbusters and DPS is important. But if they continue down the current route where tank mitigation is basically a non-issue and all that matters for success is how much DPS a tank can push out, there's going to be issues unless they fiddle the kit of the Paladin slightly...
It isnt about other players whining and just having to suck it up. It's about knowing that in a lot of cases, currently choosing to play Paladin is telling your static "I'm going to make this harder for us, and we might not even kill this boss purely because I have chosen to play Paladin rather than WAR/DRK". No player wants to feel like they're intentionally dragging their team down.

war was the first tank i lvled to 50 .i used to think "man PLD is so much easier. just 123 and press a cooldown and take no damage" since my inexperience with WAR made me die quite a lot compared to when i was PLD.
i was gonna go PLD for tanking
then HW rolled around and doing everything PLD takes noticeably much longer compared to WAR. leveled WAR to 60 and never looked back
- Was a gladiator in 1.0
- was a PLD in 1.2, had to drop to WAR
- was a PLD in 2.x
- was a PLD in 3.X. But, being a team player, I'm gearing WAR now because PLD is broken for savage and I can't stand to be carried over by my group despite my love for the class. (sword and board at the heart)
I used to main a Paladin, and have to change my job because I KNOW that my Paladin DPS (Despite stance dancing and using HQ Draconian Strength Potion) won't reach anywhere near the DPS required to clear AS3, and thus I have to change. I sincere hope the developers of Square Enix just put an eye to read just one of those topics to realize that they are dumping a class down into the sinkhole.
I switched from PLD to DRK for several reasons:
1 - Not as involved in skill rotations
2 - No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't put out more damage as a PLD with the 200 weapon than I could as DRK with the 180.
3 - Even my clears in dungeons went from potentially 20-30 min to consistently 16-22 minutes, saving me a lot of timein general.
4 - Too many nigh useless skills on PLD.
In the process of switching from PLD to WAR, currently 54 WAR. Originally played WAR to 50 in 2.0, but switched to PLD because of groups wanting PLD for Turn 4/5 in First Coil. Played PLD throughout 2.X. At 3.0, got to endgame, and the abilities just don't seem to synergize. Here's some specific complaints:
1.) Clemency is meh. I only use Clemency once in a blue moon, and when I do, it's often interrupted or I'm beaten by a healer and I just end up overhealing. The long cast time also precludes use of combos for emnity generation- enhancing PLDs glaring threat problems.
2.) Divine Veil is terrible. What a dumb ability. It only hits people close to me, has to be triggered by another party members heal, doesn't have an animation for when it's triggered, and has an absurdly long CD? OH AND IT ALSO DOESN'T HIT ME? Why is this ability even in the game? Waste of memory.
Part 2:
3.) Threat and PLDs new combos. I really like the new combos for PLD including Goring Blade and Royal Authority. The problem is, if I'm in a group with well geared DPS, it's risky to use GB and RA- and I'll start falling behind on threat. Back to 2.X RoH spam!
4.) Stance dancing SUCKS on PLD. If you want to stance dance as a PLD for a dps burn phase, you're going to have a bad time. On the GCD, so you have to waste an entire GC just to change? Check. Interrupts combos? Check. Sword Oath sucks for burn phases because it only helps your sustained dps via your auto attacks? Check.
5.) TP problems! YAY! Seriously, PLD has no native way to regain TP- shield swipe is a piss poor excuse for a TP 'saver'- more like a waste of a GC. God help your TP if you're ever expected to Shield Bash something. That abilities insane TP cost can single-handedly screw up your entire TP flow for a whole fight.
I hit Lv50 PLD on 1/9/2014, and hit Lv50 WAR on 5/13/2014. Originally, I only leveled PLD because I played PLD on FFXI, and then just wanted Lv50 since I had already started it. Later, I wanted to level another class since I wasn't raiding at the time, so I did MRD, which was faster due to DF queue times.
As soon as WAR hit Lv50, I went back to playing both BRD and WHM. I got into NIN when ROG was released, and been NIN for a while. Since "deeps" is a thing now, and I was under-performing, I tried WAR pre-Heavensward but couldn't really play it well. Almost giving up, I went back to WHM, but since most PF groups were in need of a tank, I would join as PLD. Since then, I prefer PLD. I just need to get her to Lv60. Not sure why I did NIN first![]()

I remember in the early days, many WARs went PLD. I wonder if those same players went back to WAR or just became DRKs.

it makes me a bit upset that a friend had to drop out of our static cause he was a PLD main and his other tanks weren't 60 yet...so even playing using the class full potential he still held the group back unintentionally so I'm sorry but savage does not have my interest anymore they need to go back to the coil drawing board -_- or fix PLD lol
