    In actuality PW didn't take anywhere near 18 hours to kill, but the fight plus the way the battle system worked it was possible, but that's not the devs faults that is the 18 people who decided to do that fault. The difference between most MMO's now and ffxi was that you "could" recover any fight, if u decided to. Whereas current MMO's simply create an instance and if you begin failing or fail to meet whatever dps check its just an instant wipe>reset of fight. In FFXI is you got a mob down to 20% and then started to wipe and die, you could have people kiting it or zombie pulling it to prevent a reset. Which is pretty much what those people did for PW. PW has many Wipe mechanics which then forced you to zombie/kite it for upwards of 15mins ( raising/waiting for weakness to wear/buffing) to start trying again.

    Also don't get things twisted, whatever FC is getting world first in the Coils/Alex Savage is putting just as much time into those fights if not more, its simply broken up because you HAVE to start and restart over and over. I don't keep up with stuff much anymore but if the final floor of alex savage hasn't been beaten I'm sure whatever FC is trying to beat it has put more than 18 hours into it.

    PW never required 18 hours to kill it COULD just take that long if you chose to be that dedicated

    I liked the aht urghan progression, made parties like no other game really. I always thought that hunts, instead of dropping unstained journals or whatever, drop items to be crafted into special unique(1 per inventory) that allowed 3 full parties( with 1said item per full party) to go to a world map spot( that peninsula in mor dhona is petty vacant for now) where we could join into a crazy boss "hunt" with no one wipe mechanics but still engaging fight with huge hp pool. Don't care if it only dropped glams and/or minions/ mounts/ crafting items. Just something a group can work towards outside the vertical progression raids. Also the unique items done disappear unless the Mark is beat)unlike ffxi)

    Several lawsuits were filled due to that fight by the parents of the players due to heath issues that when they stopped doing it.

    As I recall, there was also a bug that meant a phase that SHOULD have come up never did so it kept resetting to a previous one. But all anyone heard was "18 hours, FFXI sucks".

    Well the 18hr fight was never intended, and also horrible PR for the game. It was on so many news sites on gaming that spoke how people got themselves sick and such because of how long they were gaming for to do the fight.
    It's because of that that those fights ended up being readjusted with timers on them, so you could never take 5+ hrs to kill something if you could widdle it down and win, I believe they made all pop item bosses 1hr duration and if you couldn't beat it in the hour it would disappear. But at least with that time limit playerss would no longer get themselves sick by pushing themselves because of no time limit.

    So no we will never see unlimited duration bosses like that again however we have gotten PW like bosses in form of FATEs, Hunts and potentially the new sky instances being introduced in 3.1.

    How would one even win such a lawsuit? The company did not force those players to play 18h straight. As well, FFXI and FFXIV 1.0 had a warning that informed players to watch how they play:

    I never understood what Tanaka's team intention was with those two superbosses. They kept moving the goalpost on Absolute Virtue, and I can't help but wonder if they even play-tested Pandemonium Warden before releasing it.

    I find it rather telling that those two advisory screens were there under Tanaka's direction, where they designed the game to compel you to play for hours with slow sense of progress. Notice how under Yoshi-P's much more casual friendly design, there's no "A Word to Our Players" there?

    Yeah people always get hung up the 18 hr sound bite. People didn't understand the fight so they essentially zombied it for 18 hrs. Group wipes, 1 guy runs over and casts a dot on it (in XI monsters would depop/dissapear if they weren't attacked for a few seconds, ie a wipe, but an active dot on it prevented that). The guy who cast the dot would die horribly, then get a raise. Wait for the dot to fall off and do it all over again.

    It wad a giant stall tactic while the rest of the group raised and recoverred. When everyone was fixed up they would go in to fight again. Wipe. 1 guy Zombie dot it's for another 5 min. Repeat for 18 hrs.

    They just had no idea how to beat it and threw bodies and time at it. SE quickly patched it and put a hard time limit on the boss so it would despawn after like 45 min or something.

    It was more stubborn players doiniwrong. No 1 fight in xi was actually PLANNED to take over even 1 hr.

    After the 18 hour fiasco, SE put in a hard cap of 2 hours for PW. 120 minutes is also the maximum allotted time for long form dungeons in XIV. They learned their lesson.

    Even at 99 cap, PW was a cheap bastard and the only reason we eventually defeated him was with a PLD wearing the infinite reraises armor set.
