So basically, are you asking to be able to say F all to story and be allowed to go where ever you want just because you want to?
So basically, are you asking to be able to say F all to story and be allowed to go where ever you want just because you want to?
Ok, so lets go over this logically
You get the game a month ago. In numerous areas of the websites you are told that you have to complete the MSQ (Main Story Questline) make sure to read the bracketed words carefully OP.
You then proceed to do the MSQ and while you still are being given MSQ quests you are then shocked to learn you would have to complete all of them to advance to the next part of the story. Which you had to do to advance the whole time while leveling up.
Do you see where your logic is flawed? Even if the website didn't post it, common sense would have told you as you expierenced and learned how the game operated by leveling up.
You also do realize that this particular MMO is very lore/story based. So yes you are expected to go through it all, and not just jump over certain parts.
You should be allowed to go where ever your level allows you too since it's a themepark MMO, although in some thempark MMOs if you can make it there, you can get there. I'm not asking for anything as I don't care that much.
But no the story quest shouldn't be forced. Even with it forced there are a lot of players that have no clue what's going on in the story. So technically those people said F all to the story and have no clue why their character is or isn't allowed in places. Now what, it's literally no different than the story quests not being there.
That's still forcing it, especially since one can't access x dungeon or area with out playing a hundred mindless fetch quests or being called on a linkperl to be told to come here.
Ugh, daily limit, let me guess that's around lore too?Do you even "button mash through dialogue" and "skip cutscene"? It's only mindless because you're intentionally ignoring the story. The game was built around the lore, and areas are bound by the story. You can't access certain things because the lore calls for it. Plus, you can't even unlock flying in the new areas without finishing the MSQ for that area.
ALL mmos are built around lore, ALL mmos have story quests. Very few (I actually can't think of any but I know it has to be some out there) require you to do all MSQ to unlock dungeons, flying, expansions, etc. In majority, darn near all MMOs you can grind mobs to level cap if you wanted too.

Player
Once again.
This is NOT, I repeat NOT, your everyday MMO! This is a Final Fantasy MMO. Final Fantasy = Story.
Heavensward is a STORY expansion, was marketed by that, and was gated as that.
There might be a standalone expansion in the future, they might condense the 2.x MSQ in the future, but not now.
Despite some people complaining that need to do the MSQ to access HW zones and jobs as far as I am concerned it was the right thing for SE to do and has stopped almost all RMT bot armies infesting the new zones as I have yet to see any gathering bot armies in HW content undermining the value of the new materials. The only bots seen so far in HW from what I have heard is occasional normal cheating players while the RMT bots are all stuck trying to figure out how to bot run trials and dungeons yet failing to do them so they are stuck in the ARR zones thankfully. While would be nice to get rid of them in the ARR zones too, at least they are not swarming HW content thanks to the MSQ progression required that includes trials and dungeons to get up and into HW.

I'm literally disgusted by this topic.
This game is centered around it's main storyline. The statement made about "everything not end game is a tutorial" was made back when 50 was the cap and we were on patch 2.1 or some shit. It's NOT relevant to the post 50 content AT ALL.
Anyone trying to say that other MMO's are about "storytelling" as well, are full of it. Only a VERY few are like this, SWOTOR being a primary example. Most of them tho have no storytelling in them, and infact RUIN good stories (like WoW) with their method of story... stuff? it's not even storytellin in that game. I don't know what to call it besides crap, lol.
If you don't LIKE a game centered around a main storyline, then play one that isn't. Because I personally (and MANY others that have been around since early access for 2.0 and even 1.0 players) LOVE the story, and wished it never woulda ended. I can't wait for 3.1 because I wanna know what happens next! Just like I did with every other patch!
So I say to you OP, go play something that's not an MMO. Because lets face it, if you aren't doing a main storyline in other MMO's, you'll be told to raid or gtfo. Which means commiting FAR more time then you possibly could to the games to actually play them in any capacity. Even the PVP in most of them are dreadfully time consuming and rewardless.
Might I suggest games more like Diablo, or Mobas like Heroes of the Storm? Which take far less dedication to reap the rewards of playing, where you can feel satisfied in what you've acomplished without damaging your career or personal life in the process.

Most people who play MMOs make finding information about the game on the internet almost a part of their daily chore. Before the expansion released, research should have been done rather than rushing to get to Heavensward starting at Lv1. Please don't rush.
The community is unforgiving on those who are Lv60 and losing hate to a Lv51 player.

If OP actually did get a refund for this... It really doesn't set a good precedent. SE has already been way too cautious, to the point of actually making things worse ("playstyle differences" and definition of the DF, anyone?), this will make them want to take responsibility for even less things. "Sure you can get your money back if you don't like our game, no problem." Right... And it's also a bad sign for them. "They don't like our story, we have to be paying them back too, maybe should spend less resources on it. Or not do a story at all."
I honestly can't comprehend people picking up a Final Fantasy game and not wanting to do the story. Not being interested in its world, in its characters. Are you all that young that this is your first FF game, that you know nothing at all about the series? Sure, it's an MMORPG, and trust me, there's more than enough grinding and RNG in it to prove that. Sure, it's an MMORPG, but when did that become an acronym for "just gimme my stats and let me raid"? Yeah, it's an MMORPG, but it's also Final Fantasy. A name known about doing new or unusual things, that regardless of all the familiar elements, always has unique things to it.
Granted, the expression "sufficient progress" is too vague - I can agree with that. But the warning is there, and if you find it too vague, there's always the internet to look things up and get them clarified, it is common sense. Being refunded for not having done what you could have done, clarify a warning that did look suspicious and obscure to you, is not something that should happen, in my opinion. (For all intents and purposes, I could finish each and every major content update patch in 2-3 days, and that's with doing sidequests, not skipping stuff, and really only playing a few hours a day. In addition to the generic DPS queue. Maybe except 2.5, but then that was a 3-piece one, so yeah.) And sure, you can dislike stories, sure you can wish for games where you're not forced to do that. There's are entire genres for that - hack'n'slash, moba, what have you. "RPG" should no be reduced to "character customisation and stats and roles-within-a-team".
I really don't see why you'd even play FFXIV without caring about the story. Then you'd just be walking through this brilliant world without knowing squat about it. Knowing why we do the things we do makes the experience far more interesting and can leave a lasting impression, as opposed to just being a quick reward that's just as quickly forgotten.
