Don't know much about Scholar healing, do you. Crit is how they make up for the lack general healing over White Mage's collection of healing spells (though White Mages need just as much piety to feed those spells). I say going with crit gear over the book was a smart decision.

It's not a good decision. Crit is the best secondary for sch by a mile, but it still gets blown out of the water by weapon damage.

People can get whatever they want, no skin off my back. But if they're trying to get the most effective upgrade then it's the weapon, hands down.
