When Friends, or you, become an Elitist.

I got called an elitist once by a group of friends I was with back in another MMO when I asked the off tank to take the adds on me and the healer to actually heal me since my self heals could only get me so far, they actually kept on doing it so I kind of just stopped talking to them and left them for good.

Since then whenever I see "A friend is becoming an elitist" or someone claiming someone else is elitist I kind of just get irked, the word is rarely ever used right.

I've always applied the word "elitist" to fully leveled players who outgear the content they're doing that talk down to and mistreat other players partied with them who are less experienced or leveled than they are because they feel they can. Not necessarily top tier players though they can have elitist attitudes too, obviously. Or even good players for that matter, just more advanced.

From my experiences, the most annoying of these players are the ones who seem to be itching for what I call a gear-carry, where they go into a roulette or any df instance literally feeling entitled to everyone that pops in the instance being at least on par with them, gearwise, and then proceed to insult and harass anyone who doesn't meet their ridiculous expectations, especially if it starts to cause issues for the rest of the party or waste everyone's time and particularly if it's an instance that's low enough level or ilv that half the people there including the one starting it most likely aren't 100% aware of the actual mechanics of the fights. :P

What I don't view as elitism are situations like;
- setting requirements for farm parties and sticking to those requirements, or expecting others to be on their best performance for a clear group or static
- having moderate/reasonable expectations for performance or improvement when in a df party
- ranting on ts or fc/ls chat about how bad someone in your party is playing
- simply putting more effort into something or being better geared or more progressed or experienced at something than someone else

"Toxicity" on the other hand, to me has always brought to mind players at any point in the game that are just generally mean, judgemental, trollish, overdramatic or manipulative, bullies, creepers/stalkers/harassers, etc., and of course elitism. It's basically an all-encompassing term in my mind. I've never been called either elitist of toxic myself, but honestly with as loosely as those terms get used at times, I wouldn't be surprised if I eventually did. I just try to be considerate of others.

I'm referring to those people who have a sense of entitlement, that they are the very best and should be rewarded for everything they do.

That's like 99% of the playerbase, especially the ones that keep asking for ugh..... tokens!

I've had people multiple times, that i've seen not be elitist per se, but just outright rude and insulting..... one of those times arose from when the tank kept chain pulling, not giving me the time to cast buffs, when i asked him if he would allow me to cast buffs before he started pulling, he proceeded with assaulting me with a colorful selection of names, saying "i don't have time to slow down for idiots who don't know how to play" i didn't want to deal with the rudeness, since the other two players seemed to be buddies with him, and were chiming in, i asked to be kicked, which resulted in MORE colorful language, insults, and such. I've had multiple occurances of people being just outright rude as such. another time, the tank was pulling more than he could handle, i tried to keep him up, but he ended up dying and the raid wiped. his response? "hey healer, your mother is a WHORE". I don't get where all these rude people have come from all of a sudden...

I've been called an elitist by my friends a lot. Thing is I *ONLY* play with my friends since I don't want to deal with the majority of the terribads. IF for some magical reason I have to play with other players. I never scream/insult/rage/leave/kick them. If it's extremely obvious they have no clue what they're doing I ask them if they want advice and instruct them on how to play better.

That's the difference between an elitist and a jerkwad. Something majority of this community doesn't seem to understand.

I've encountered players who will act as if they're gods gift to the game itself, and I've also encountered players who honestly just strive to get their moneys worth by doing everything in game.

I believe there's different levels of an "Elitist" but that's just my opinion.

I'm not a fan of the players who will sit and bash another player who is still learning the mechanics to a trial or a player who is still learning the skills of their main class. It does get under my skin when a player/friend refuses to help the newer players with the beginning trials and dungeons because they're not "Hard Mode" or "Extreme."

As for me personally, I'd love to hit level cap with every class and get every achievement, but that's just how I am with any game I play lol But I do take the time to help friends get a clear or help them fate grind. I'd rather come off as someone who is willing to help instead of someone who will make you feel like you shouldn't even play.

Meh, I'll sometimes get frustrated and tell my fc mates to stop wasting my time and focus if I'm helping them with a clear and we are wiping cuz they're joking around on TS
