3.x Story Speculation (Obviously spoilers for all of Heavensward)

Was I the only one wondering if the female Ascian you fight against might be Minfillia? Taken over similar to how Lahabrea did to Thancred? I thought before i finished the story that they were going to reveal that but apparently not yet.

I'm pretty sure Ascians take over physical bodies, which was why the female one had a female voice but a male body. If it had taken over Minfilia, it would've been her body.

Unless my eyes were seriously screwing with me every time I saw her and she did actually have a female body? >.>

Because he's "your voice" for all conversations, and it saves having to voice 40 different versions of each dialog. See they worked around this in games that are fully voiced like Mass Effect by giving the Hero a consistent name and only one voice per gender. But then another game by the same company (Dragon Age) doesn't voice the hero character. Then there is Saints Row 3 and Saints Row 4 where there are 6 voices (3 per gender) and a few pronoun gaffs.

Basically the direction of the game is that we will see all the Scions again, but we may only see them altogether again for them to have a heroic sacrifice ala Palom and Porom in FFIV or Louisoix at the end of V1.0 . We've been given that hint with Y'shtola already.

That is what worries me about the Scions. They have been in the FF14 story since 1.0 and served as Major Characters but now it seems they are fated to be killed off either in 3.X era or 4.0 era.

However, the only bright side I see from this is that this may give SE room to make 4.0 provide the option for new characters to start in 2.0 era or 4.0 era since 4.0 era may be a clean slate storyline like 2.0 was for Legacy players and New Adventurers.

Provided they also include some Legacy Dialogue for the 1.0/2.0/3.0 Characters like they did with 2.0.

I dunno, how has Y'shtola been given that hint of being killed off? Is it the whole "Over use your aether vision and you'll die!" thing? Honestly, I think this is just more of a time for SE to revamp their looks and all that, maybe give us a few plots where they do stuff (Because everyone complains about how they never do anything) and spend time going a bit more into their characters. Like, maybe Y'shtola being blinded and having the dangerous aether vision will be a plot point, but I doubt we won't eventually fix it sometime.

Matoya wouldn't have mentioned it if it wasn't fatalistic. Just like how E-Sumi-Yan warns Sylphie during the Conjurer storyline about needing to borrow from nature, not use ones life force.

I would like to see Thanced as he and Y'shtola are my two favorites. Minfilia was annoying, but I wonder if she will be used to become a primal. She did have a striking pose in Chrysilis that reminded me of the esper Mateus.

One thing though I would like for Nanamo to have stayed dead, and Haurchefant everyone's OTP to be alive still. We need an event where we get to search his room in fortemps manner, and find the horse head that he wore during seasonal event.

So we can all do this.

But that's the thing Sylphie found a way to stop relying on her own lifeforce, I'm sure there will be a plot that we restore her sight or find a way that she'll be able to use an external power source after she has some health issues, but nothing major like her death. I mean.. Not everything brought up in the story will have permanent effects in the long term, look at Nanamo's "death", how Hydaelyn's power was dimming from our wanton use of her power, or all the various mentions of us just being a "pawn" of people and having little agency of our own. Like.. Nanamo is alive, Hydaelyn is back and better than before, and we're still doing various side quests and getting treated like a messenger.

Hopefully Minfilia just does things besides sit in a room and be a damsel in distress. I don't get why everyone likes Thancred so much, he's kinda badass at times, but most of the times he's a huge flirtatious doofus.

I like Haurchefant, but his death is very satisfying. He did what he felt was right and good on him, it was a very noble death. Nanamo died randomly and in much more of a cheap way (Like you're telling me Nanamo totally wasn't paranoid whenever the walls have ears and she was talking about abdicating the throne?), I'm glad she's alive because she can actually continue to do things and be more of an active player in FFXIV's story.

Sylphie , like all class NPC's doesn't show up again. There is lore reasons why you can't use your life energy do stuff like this. It shortens your life (which is what happened to... I think it was Sylphie's mom was it?)

I'd rather Y'shtola stick around, but clearly something is being setup or they would never have bothered to mention this. That's my point.

I was kinda like "NOOO" at Haurchefant because that pulled the "Aerith on Disc 1" event. Why is it that people only perma-die from magical gaping wounds (See Ysayle), and not poison (Nanamo), or just the crap beat out of them (Ser Aymeric , Thancred, Raubahn)

More to the point Nanamo's supposed death is the "Women in refrigerators" trope. Right after Moenbryda (alas we hardly knew ye.) In HW we also have Ysayle dying for what I feel was inconsistent plot point... considering that we beat her up once when we treated her as a Primal and another Primal also beat her up.

So I'd be very disappointed if female cast members are being killed off just to pull at the player (and NPC's) emotions.

Wait...become a primal, as in I get to fight and see her disperse into aether? I'm...surprisingly okay with this.

Yeah the Ul'dah thing was cringe-worthy. Like "way to go and undo the emotional plotpoint that most people were clinging to from the 2.55 storyline". I didn't care for Nanamo but even I saw the storyline value her death would have brought. Raubhan would have grown as a character and gone down the road of doing what he needs to honor Nanamo's memory and ensure her dream comes true.

As much as I liked BurontHaurchefant, he played the trope of the bastard son quite well. Especially when I met his two step brothers; it reeked of "the son with less legitimacy ends up outdoing his 'trueborn' brothers". In a way, it was like being friends with Ramza Beoulve (another half-blood son that ended up outdoing his 'trueborn' brothers).

Ugh, I'm still mad about Moenbryda. Not because it liked her, but because I despite shoddy writing. And that whole bit was just bad. This goes back to a point I made on expanding the cast instead of preserving the status quo. As of Heavensward, the only real additions we've had were Aymeric and Lucia (technically characters introduced during ARR). Everyone else was either sealed away or killed off.

To draw a FFXI parellel, this would be the same as if they had killed off everyone but Ulmia (and you, the adventurer) at the end of Chains of Promathia.
