A serious discussion about abridging the story quest 1-50 (discouraging new players)

Though honestly, I don't know why we are discussing this now. For them to learn in a future expansion perhaps? The decision for HW has already been made, I don't think they are going to change that aspect now.

It's never too late for them to go through and pare down the filler in the 50 MSQ, thus saving some subs in the process.

Really, doing that alone would be a HUGE help. I'm sure there have already been tons of ragequits as a result of the 50 MSQ, probably people who came back to try the expansion and just gave up after realizing how much boring, crappy filler they were going to have to slog through before actually being able to try one of the new classes.

That's the thing some folks just don't seem to understand: it's VERY easy to say "HOW CAN YOU NOT LOVE FFXIV'S STORY!?!!" when you've played through it somewhat recently and were invested in it from the start. For people who may have played half way through then left for ~a year, they're coming back to try out the new content, not to see the rest of the story.

It's basically like someone switching banks because they didn't like the fees from their old bank, then they give their old bank a try again and the old bank is like "Now you have to pay all of the fees that you missed when you weren't here."

And even the most devout lore nuts can't seem to come up with a good reason as to why players should have to watch the story. I don't think I've even seen someone say, "The story is really good and you should experience it!" but instead they're like "YOU CAN JUST HIT ESC SO WHY ARE YOU COMPLAINING?!!??!?!"

If it's something players are just going to mash esc through anyway, why force them to do it at all?

so my question to the people who bought the expac... why did you buy it? you knew the expansion was gated by the story they said that 3 months in advance and yet you still bought it... you didnt have to until you actually beat the story but you STILL did and are now complaining.... so my question is why?

I bought the expansion because I (just barely) finished the MSQ in time. If I didn't, I would have quit the game.

I know some people who didn't make it in time. They missed out on the first days of the expansion, of experiencing dungeons and other content for the first time with other people. I don't think that is right.

Just because I purchased the game and am still having fun with it doesn't mean that I like/agree with every facet of it. Some of us don't need to see others suffer through content they don't enjoy to validate our own trudging through that content ourselves.

People have quoted a list of features for HW (from SE) earlier in this thread and nowhere did anyone say anything about "must have the MSQ completed to access HW content".

And while the fact that you had to finish the MSQ was something SE mentioned on the FFXIV site at some point, I'm sure, it's not like every promo video for the new classes had a warning cautioning players about needing to finish it first. Many people probably saw that there was new content and didn't even begin to assume that there'd be something hold them back from experiencing it on day 1. Hell, new classes are almost NEVER gated...

You have to remember that players have varying levels of investment in FFXIV. For some, it's their entire goddamn life. For others, it's just one of many games they play or may be INTERESTED in playing at some point in the future. There's no reason to expect people to be aware of everything that needs to be done in order to experience expansion content.

And frankly, gating expansion content behind story content is unheard of in today's MMO market, except where level is concerned.

Again, it has nothing to do with the quality of the story and everything to do with the fact that some people don't play MMOs for the story. FFXIV's dungeons and raids are right up there with WoW's, IMO, and I know plenty of people who would play FFXIV just for the endgame, but getting there is just a long, boring, pointless, ESC-mashing tedium festival. At a certain point, they just decide to spend the precious little free time they have playing a game that'll actually let them have fun right away instead of gating the fun behind hours upon hours of boredom.

So let me get this straight. You guys want to remove parts of the MSQ because it is gating new players from the expansion between 1 - 50.

Just so you know the MSQ from 1- 50 is the fastest way to level to 50. It is the post 50 MSQ that should be made into a unabridged version to help people get through the gate faster.

Most of the complaints on this thread are about the MSQ from 1 - 50 when the actual issue is the post 2.0 patch MSQ.

You are assuming that everyone reads the forums and watches the dev letters. No where on the website or on any promotional material does it say that it just says "sufficient progress" which is a rather open ended statement.

A brand new player wouldn't know to come to the forums or some other XIV website to verify whether or not they needed the base game completed in order to use one of the fancy new jobs on the box of the game they picked up.

BTW They did not speed up the leveling process considerably, all they did was add EXP to 2.1-2.55 MSQ quests and make first time dungeon/trial/etc runners have priority over people re-queuing. They did not change a single thing other than that, unless you can post proof of it which is BS because i just sat through 1-50 on this game and it was the same as always then yeah I am all ears!

So increasing the xp for all 1-49 quests, tripling the number of available beast tribe quests, cutting the cost of food buffs and increasing FC buffs didn't help the leveling process.
