Some reading material. It's an aggressive guard stance that is half-risk/half-reward. Not as stable as other guards, the point of it is that you also are challenging the opponent with range. A wrong misstep can leave them open to you driving your sword into the throat or body.
It's awesome how similar those sword stances are to Japanese ones. Two cultures that never even really fought eachother.
