I think it's more that in Japan it's more socially acceptable to view women as not having the same strength or purpose as men. In designing Au Ra, for instance, SE admitted outright that they wanted to show that the females need to be protected.

I never really got that feeling with the only Au Ra we meet. Yugiri is a badass, a capable warrior and a steadfast protector of her people. Despite her clear exhaustion and fatigue she's determined to hold it together, I never once got the feeling like I needed to protect her from the big scary world. The closest we ever see to that happening is when various characters are like "omg player only you can stop the primals and save us all! Kill them plz." But that's about it.

But yeah, this whole design point they made with the fem Au Ra is contradictory to the role even you play in the game. You're the chosen fighter amidst all this, and the one leading the charge into the fray. I'm not sure where they expected this concept to fit unless Yugiri is going to the one exception and any fem Au Ra NPCs we run across are going to be completely useless. Sad for it to be that way if it's so.... one of the bigger things driving me away from Mi'qote is how you see most of their NPCs portrayed. It blemishes the image I have of my own character no matter how much I make her different.

Oh yeah, I totally feel you, Y'shtola and two of the Moon Keepers you see during the Moogle Post questlines are some of the few Miqo'te NPCs I like in game, but I have a strong feeling that Yugiri is going to be basically the most useful and action orientated Au Ra girl we see, if we see many at all. I really tried to make a badass Au Ra girl but it's so difficult whenever their entire feel seems to be "Moe as hell" and the max height is stuck at 5'3 >_>
