Differences between male and female armor sets are fine - the Tactics job designs by Akihiko Yoshida are really well done and are a good representation of how it can be done correctly.
I think the main issue people have is that the female versions are either the male version but with boob indentions (or none at all), or they just cut a hole somewhere in the original. Not exactly unique designs for the different genders, just kinda like "Uh, guys like looking at girls' tummies right? Let's go with that."
Ironically I'm fairly certain Mr. Yoshida also designed the AFs for all the jobs of 1.0~2.0, so either he wasn't paid enough to design the female versions or they didn't bother with that at all and cut holes in his original designs for the females occasionally.
E: Also, I feel like it's just BRD and DRG that have the holes for their female AFs. Yeah? Nah? Can't entirely remember. If that's the case, I imagine DRK will either have boob identions or just be the exact same as the male version.

Firstly, the "example" i gave was more of a statement made from observing trends throughout my years of playing this game. Simply put if the option to use a revealing torso option exist it will be used very often.Nor is it any reason to lock female avatars into being mere copies of the quite masculine/macho AF either. If the AF gear is meant to be iconic gear, then I can see no reasonable argument against there being a greater emphasis to ensure that the look of the AF gear is maintained while at the same time actually accounting for differences in gender.
Oh, to your suggestion about glamoring the dancer like gear over unwanted AF. WHY? Why should that be necessary? Why force players with female avatars to use the glamor system in that way?
...and on that note, the utterly horrid Papal robes and hat that has been inflicted on White Mage will absolutely require glamoring to eradicate it. Honestly, what focus group were they using to come up with that, one based in the Vatican?
Now I was going to write out a long rant about how AF should fit the lore before all else, how gamers male and female should be allowed to play as a Dark Knight and look the part they chose to play. To say there is a chance of it changing now is more than a little ignorant, the decision has been made and implemented, we simply have not officially seen the finished product.
In my opinion the DRK AF looks epic, it looks like a complete monster capable of tearing through enemies. Bringing that kind of ferocity to my character is going to be awesome, i'm going to look like a hulking Juggernaut ripping in to mobs with my great sword along side my static group. I really hope those that main female characters get the chance to feel that way, it would really suck to stand side by side to another DRK both in AF, and see them as a joke compared to what a real DRK should look like (my opinion), the same thing that happened to female DRG happen again.
I thought female drugs were a joke because they were...well, drgs. Not because they were female. In my opinion the DRK AF looks epic, it looks like a complete monster capable of tearing through enemies. I support this, good post OP.
Unrelated: I drool every time I see that AF armor, me wantie... desperately! There's a very good chance every upgrade I get will be glamoured in to the drk af set, it's so badass.
Nah, it's on the original designs:

I think the female bard design is cute, and actually would have worked for the male version, too. I don't think that it's too revealing at all.
The only other AF I can think of with gender specific versions is the Scholar AF.
I prefer small differences between the designs over complete remodels. I think that the Tactics designs are great, but I think the differences in that game largely existed so that you could tell your characters apart. I just used that as an example to show that alternate designs by gender have existed in some other FF games, and actually did look quite nice.
And how hulking do you think lalafel dark knights will look, male or female?Firstly, the "example" i gave was more of a statement made from observing trends throughout my years of playing this game. Simply put if the option to use a revealing torso option exist it will be used very often.

If people wanted to look like a a hulking juggernaut they would roll male rhoe's, as you have done. No female, with the exception of female rhoe's, looks physically imposing. An identical suit of armour will not make them look like hulking juggernauts, because it will not add height or mass. That being the case, why should they not be different, to accentuate the fact that the males and females are different? Since, as much as you seem to dislike it, they are just that; different.
Its great that you want to feel like a hulking juggernaut, and that you will get the chance to; but why are you trying to impose your preference upon those that rolled a female character, when they might have other reasons for choosing dark knight? There are plenty of people that like the exposed midriff design for the female dragoons. I expect plenty of people would be happy with and welcome a similar design for female dark knights.
