The idea of new playable races in a game like FFXIV confuses me.

I'm not against them exactly; I'd like to see new kinds of people walking around. I just don't understand how it's supposed to work with a game where you're really only supposed to play one character.

In other games when they add new races, you're generally restricted to one class you choose at character creation. So when new races come out, you can just play a class you haven't before. But in FFXIV, as was the case with XI, people do everything on one character that becomes increasingly more difficult to redo and that they become increasingly attached to. Just the armory system alone is reason enough to not want to start a second character (for instance if you raised CON to be able to heal and buff yourself on a fighter you probably don't want to do it again for another character with a fighter main), but if the game finally adds some meaningful and difficult content like XI had that's another reason not to start over (think fame, level cap quests, story mission completion, stuff you wouldn't want to have to do twice).

Now the two extra sexes upon PS3 release make perfect sense. If it's really going to be the "re-launch" of the game and hopefully get a whole ton of new people to start, then it's fine that there are more choices at that time. Many people will be playing for the first time, or for the first time since abandoning the game directly after PC launch, and the game in general will be able to enjoy incorporating the new choices en masse.

Additional races later on, though, don't make much sense to me. It takes a lot to motion capture new animations and retool existing equipment models to work on new races, and yet at that point it may not add much to the game in exchange. Very few people will be starting new or starting over and be able to select them. A good alternative would be to allow everyone in the game a one-time, irreversible change to anything new when added, although that would also be pretty awkward to be able to change your character's race as opposed to cosmetic things like hairstyles.

Again, I'm all for seeing player qiqirn or totally new races from some yet-unseen continent and not from any past FF game either. I'm just curious how people (or the developers) think this would all work out, because I don't see it very well.

I would LOVE to see any new kind of race, maybe like a playable Qiqirn or anything else fresh! I like the races that the game has, and I was happy that they were made a part of this game too (as a veteran of XI), but I was slightly disappointed to see that there wasn't really any *new* races, if you don't count Highlanders...

Not to mention 60% of Hyurs already look like Bieber.
    I realized that, too.
Sometimes they try to cover that fact with a little goatee, but most even don't bother to do that.
    Scary.

Judging from how Square handled XI-- "Deal with it" is their genuine developer point of view. =) Crazy part: I honestly don't know anyone that actually regretted rerolling in XI. But I can't speak for everyone so, /shrug. But it's not like Square would force anyone to start over. (Although that'd be great if it became p2p)

The way I see it Tsukino is that some people would be willing to reroll, and others wouldn't. Well, let that would be the magic in the new genders or races then. They'll have something to prove.

Additional races later on, though, don't make much sense to me. It takes just as much mo-cap, new animations, retooling models and work for new genders as races. (Albeit perhaps twice. IF the new race would have both male and female). Female Roegadyns will need their own mo-cap, pretooling resources, sound, animation, and et cetera. They're not going to use male Roegadyn resources lol. Same for the Male Mi'qotes. I think the point the devs mean to drive at us is creating new genders is just as difficult as creating new races. They require the same amount of unique and individual resources. So if we're going to do one, why not do both? That is their thinking, maybe. And perhaps are leaving that open for future projects.

Only sub-race, same-gender share the same mo-cap, animations, and model tools as their counterparts. (aside from Highlanders>Midlander, which presently lack the female gender). Which I think is a failure due to deadlines. So they could add new, completely unique races to the game, or differentiate the present subclasses so that they don't look like simple recolors of their counterpart. I think that is why Yoshi-P is willing to let us run our imaginations wild. I think that is what presently bothers the dev. team. But anyway, clearly I'm letting my imagination run wild. o_O

When did XI ever add something new that all existing characters couldn't access?

That's a good point. I wasn't thinking of accessibility. Existing players could go back and enjoy the changes to the XP requirements for 75 and other handrails given out post '05, despite all the horror to some 'veterans' who felt cheated. No point pouring salt on old wounds. But when it came to the good of the game, not the individual, Square usually would go ahead and do it. I think that's amicable. Hence the argument.^^

The way I see it, Square would be providing a huge boon for it's playerbase, both current and potential, by providing new and improved character options. It would kinda suck if you had to reroll. But you wouldn't have to reroll, would you?

Sticking with the XIV universe, I wouldn't mind playing as one of those horned kids from Gridania.

Wow, such a killjoy.... I say F that dude. I want to be a Goblin, and the models for them already exist in the game. They would also fit the FFXIV lore because they already exist in the game. Some Qiqirn and Goblin mobs are non-agrressive, and there is even lore in FFXIV (not just FFXI) to suggest that they can be good or at least a neutral race.

While I find the posibility of Ivalice races cool, I find Goblins and Qiqirn to be a bit more probable than races that currently dont even exist in the game. However, as unlikely it is that Ivalice races would be implemented, I find it completely impossible that playable Moogles would be implemented. Just not gonna happen.... as much as I'd like it too. The most logical choice is probably the (imo) boring choice, the Horned people (Seedseers? or whatever they are called). I just want a monsterous race, even if its not Goblins. All the other races look too kind/pretty/sexy. Even the Roeg look pretty normal. But I'd rather have something beastly.
