I thought Hyur and Miqo'te were about equal. It's Lalafell and especially Elezen that you tend to see very few of.I'd wait for the benchmark and play around with Au-ra first just to see if you prefer them. If you like to feel unique then Hyur are certainly the lesser played race. You can always try and make a less generic looking Miqo'te though to help with that (why I chose tan skin, the majority of cat girls I see are pale skinned).
Miqo'te have less exciting options for hair.
EDIT: Took me like a day before i realized i spelled Miqo'te wrong

I actually see Lalafell everywhere. I'm fairly certain they reproduce asexually, like a fungus.
I don't see many Elezen in comparison though. Probably the least common for me are Roe.
The answer is neither. What you want is inside this link

Mi'qote is the best race in this game you know.

Well, we the highlanders, the FF Saiyans, are way different than our midlander counterpart. That actually make us completely different compared to Miqo'tes. Our animatios are less girly and princess-like, and we are more muscular. Our running animation is decent too. It's a good choice for tank-like classes.

*Fears the direction this thread will go*
Well, I don't know if it'll help you any, but when it came to me making my characters, I based both my main and all my alts around a fictional story/webcomic I'm writing, including the cat girl I'm playing as. This lead to me creating 1 cat girl, 1 male midlander hyru, 1 female midlander hyru, 1 male duskwright, and 1 female highlander hyru. The only one in there that isn't part of my whole "characters from my own fictional story" is the female Lalafell I made... (Along with the Au Ra I intend to make down the road) and even then, I tried to be creative on that.
Here's another piece of logic to go by that works better for most players though: What appeals to you the most? One thing you could try is to mess around with "creating" a new character and see if you can make a Miqo'te the way you want her to be. Another thing you could do before deciding to switch would be to find any friend that happens to be playing as a female Miqo'te, and ask the player if he/she could go through all their animations. (Emotes, simple running, etc)
By the end of the day though... quite frankly, the decision rests with you to remain as a Hyru or change to a Miqo'te.
So i have alts of every race, and miqote was my first. I love my miqote, but there were some issues with it. Some outfits dont look good on a miqote because of the ears and tail. I love glamour/vanity items, so this was a big issue for me. One example would be the sch/smn pvp set that looks like a deer, the tail will clip right threw it very awkwardly. The new bunny outfit from the gold saucer looks a bit odd too. All helmets look awful. And some hats I wish they would have just let the ears come threw them instead of molding the hat around them.
So if outfits are a big thing for you Id suggest another race. Hyur is very generic and look good in all armor. Elezen have weirdly long necks and too small of heads for their body, so some outfits look odd on them. Lalafell are cute, but it's sometimes hard to see certain outfits on them cause they are so small. And roe, depending on how chiseled you make yours, can look really bad or fairly decent.
There's my 2 cents.
My advice: Wait until the benchmark hits so you can play around with the Au Ra race.
I would say if you're questioning it, go ahead and try a Miqo'teIt can be fun to try out new races for awhile. You may love the change, or perhaps you'll end up switching back, but you'll never know unless you give it a shot.
