I guess though their use as guardsmen does help explain the link into PLD a lot more effectively though - as you're already acting as a pseudo cop around town, why not make that official?
I believe the reason is that the guild is part of the Colosseum, whose owner is none other than the Flame General, Raubahn himself. Given the endemic corruption in Ul'dah's standing units, I assumed that Raubahn decided to rely on his gladiators as a private army of sorts, to investigate and resolve issues that he did not wish the Immortal Flames to be involved in. In any case, the units also operate somewhat like private armies as well, so I don't think Raubahn is particularly exceptional in this regard.

From what little we know so far males were designed to be "tall, tough and cool" and the female are "elegant and mysterious"

I always felt the term noble savage could easily go to the Hellsguard Roegadyn. While they do have their lore intertwined with that of the Warrior job i hope they may also have a connection to Dark Knight as their character creation bio seems to support what i believe the jobs origin could be.

    Lohengarde/ Hellsguard
The Lohengarde are a clan of Roegadyn with body and mind tempered by the unforgiving heat of the volcanic regions they inhabit. Believing the mountains of flame to be gates to the underworld, their line has for centuries stood vigil over them to prevent the passage of souls back to the realm of the living. Their sheer girth and steely demeanor open to the Hellsguard a wide range of paths, from the martial to the monastic.
As they hail from the volcanoes of Abalathia's Spine, they have no real city to call their own (and many Lohengarde seem to like it that way). If they are to be found in number in any city-state, it is in Ul'dah, where there is no shortage of the sort of sell-sword work that many wandering Lohengarde engage in - and no shortage of coin with which to pay them.

I did. And I did not say GLA, I said PLDs. As for PLDs... yes, they're not exactly in their glory days right now. That does not change their principles or idealized form.

Interesting note, I thought; despite what the descriptions about their Tribe say, the Hellsguard actually have some of the lowest physical stats around, and as someone who hasn't actually done the Warrior quest (I've not even heard anything about it), literally my only interactions with Hellsguards have been as Ul'dahn nobles.

Either way... Yeah, I still can't decide. It's difficult choose which City-State, and difficult choosing which Class, which makes it even harder to make the single "perfect" choice. I dunno, you guys mind riffing off the idea a bit, and giving you opinions a little more? What makes more sense, or what sort of "personality" either choice conveys, if anything?

Not nobles, but people who worked their way up.

Suggestion the first. Thaum/BLM to Dark Knight. Dark Knight looks like its going to be a DOM class. What has been revealed that makes it unique is that its magic heavy. With that being the case the closest dark magic class is thaum/blm so Learn the powers of Darkness. Then learn some armor glad. Gives you both. with my "fallen noble" theory you could easily be using Uldah as a chance to get a second start... of course Uldah in 3.0 might have been completely reordered.

Suggestion the Second. Arcanist/maraud to dark knight. Not as strong a connection to the Dark, but Arcanists are much more rational and almost scientific about magic if that's a direction you want to go, limsa also gives you a place to build a fortune and lets you aggressively attack Garleans to make money via Privateering.

I suppose the issue is that I really like the Gladiator and Warrior themes, but not really the Paladin or Marauder themes. Both cities make sense, it's just figuring which one "fits" more. I guess we'll just have to see how 2.55 pans out, and if it addressed the Au Ra in any way.

EDIT: I suppose my thinking is, as a Gladiator, you could imagine this guy being a refugee who is looking to regain his sense of honor, by competing in the Colosseum, which has traditionally been depicted as a harsh environment. On the other hand, from what I've been told, you don't actually *compete* in the Colosseum (save for the brief excursion with the Manderville Man himself), which makes it kind of a null point.

As a Warrior, I've always dug the savage, almost tribal types of warrior cultures, which may not suit the *entire* Au Ra race, but seems fitting for one who has been fed-up with running away, and now seeks to confront his enemies head-on. Yet, the Marauder still gives off kind of a "pirate-y vibe" in some ways, and having never really played much in the Limsa Lominsa area, I have a hard time gauging if it's really a pirate/fishermen culture, or if that's just been my particular interactions with the area.

I've tried reading up wikipedia articles on the different Classes, Jobs, and locations, but they just don't give the kind of in-depth information you guys have. That's why I love hearing you guys' opinions ^_^

All of the Limsa classes deal with being part of the government, arcanist as much covers magical study as it does cover dealing with smuggling and illegal piracy. Marauder has you fighting monsters and bandits to protect the people of Limsa. Rogue has you being a secret agent basically. Limsa's plot in general is pretty much about trying to convert to a point of respectability from a nation of pirates by force if necissary.
