What about the F2P success stories? Like World of Tanks and Destiny. Hmm? If a F2P failed, it was because it was a BAD GAME to begin with. Not because it wasn't P2P.

F2P haters' gonna hate. Easy to blame things on a label. Hard to back it up w/ facts though.

As someone who has been around to a few (dozen) different MMOs over the years, the game's actual quality is often mutually exclusive from its pay model.
I've seen plenty of bad games thrive when good games get the shaft because advertising and pay models are handled poorly. Did you know Horizons (now called Istaria) is still around while City of Heroes got shut down?
And let me tell you, while it had flaws, CoH was definitely not a bad game. Niche, definitely, but not bad.
Horizons, on the other hand, was so legendary in its lack of quality and changed hands so many times that they had to change the game's name completely to disassociate it from its former reputation (may also be copyright reasons, see "changed hands so many times"). It bills itself as a "crafting MMO." Then shows screenshots of the combat system. Yeah.
Games go F2P when they're not financially viable as a P2P game for the parent company, or when the parent company thinks they can squeeze more money by going F2P. The game's quality isn't often taken into consideration.
But while pay model may be mutually exclusive from the game's quality (usually), it's not mutually exclusive from its attractiveness to customers.

Destiny isn't truly free to play. You have to pay for patch content every few months. Paying for content every 2-3 months is no different than patch content being completely free for FFXIV with a monthly fee.

Yea Destiny is a FPS but with a mmo like gear system. There are very few updates and when there are they are usually bug fixes. You have to pay $20 for each expansion pack which is a semi big update. Activision contracted with Bungie to make the game and 5 expansions. So basically you paying $60 + $20 + $20 + $20 + $20 + $20 for the life time of the game assuming they make it to the 5th expansion. Nothing with updated content is usually ever free.

Destiny is one of the biggest dissapointments in years, and as stated before, its not even close to F2P model. I still feel cheated I bought the season pass. The last "expansion" update was already in the game. We dl 3mb file just to unlock few 5-10min quests and a raid even baby could beat. Plus the loot system is horrible in so many ways. Not to mention it took bungie months to implement voice chat in the game, and before that there was no way to communicate with other players than sending messages trough PSN which might take up to 5-10mins before its delivered. Only thing that keeps people playing it is the actual gameplay which is great. Everything else is bugged and the game lacks story and content.

Edit: I dont even know why im whining about destiny anymore. Guess I still hate it from the bottom of my heart so seeing it even getting mentioned makes me see red.

Heck the relaunch of 14 was a complete copy of Cataclysm. Hey, let's have a big dragon destroy the entire world so we can rebuild it. I swear we are one expansion away from Pandas.

I really dont think they need to worry about competing with Elder Scrolls Online. The game is pretty bad.

If everyone was paying attention Yoshida explained a long time ago why FFXIV likely wont go f2p any time soon. They dont really have to worry about investors like Zenimax and Bethesda do or Bioware, did who expect immediate returns (which btw is absolutely incredibly retarded to expect when it comes to an MMO).
