Or you can get over yourself and not expect people to do homework in the DUTY FINDER. You want people who know the mechanics? Party Finder is that way. So is your Free Company. There is ZERO reason to have to look up videos if you're doing something in DF.All these people saying they learn by someone telling them. Imagine if you will you watched a video first and then they told you as well. Now you've received the info twice. EVEN BETTER.
Seriously the videos are like 10-15 minutes long. At some point your stubbornness is effecting other people in a negative way. Justify it all you want, but people ARE negatively effected by your own selfish behavior. I don't really care what everyone's justification are. Get over yourself and meet people half way.
I will always run blind. I do it in df. You can't expect anything. And I'm not going to ruin the fun of the fight by watching a video. And I don't expect it from others. You wanna have a group that you know what's going on, make your own and make it a requirement. But don't do expecting everyone to know everything.
(albeit I'm a fast learner so I don't usually end up hindering a group, but not everyone can see what's going on and grasp the concept in the first minutes and a half)
During the first week of a patch release I'll go in blind, usually because there isn't a good enough guide that provides at least some explanation of what is going on. (And by that I mean from Mr Happy or MTQCapture.) But, even after having watched a video guide, it only gives me an idea of what mechanics to expect and how to respond to them. A video or text guide doesn't give you a personalized feel of the fights. Nothing beats personal experience and practice. Ever.
You DO realize this thread wasn't explicitly about the DF right? RIGHT? Reading comprehension!
Plus, that's still being selfish. "because DF" is a poor reason to be selfish and come with zero knowledge. That's just an excuse.

there is definitely a reason if you actually care about the experience of the people in your group you might try to learn something before you join them
There's sort of a time and a place.
If you don't wanna watch a video, you can try DF or make a PF being very explicit that you're new and it's a learning party.
It just goes without saying that if a PF requests you've watched videos to be able to talk about mechanics easily or is a farming party, don't join.
An Xbox One version of this game would be perfect. You'll be able to have the game and video up at the same time.
I tried watching videos for T1 thru T6, and none helped me. Most are from a dps perspective, but I'm a healer. I learn via Duty Finder.
Unfortunately, this has come to an end, because I caved and watched countless videos on T9 and still never made it past Golems. I've been trying for months. As of two weeks ago, I don't try anymore.
I posted this same thing on reddit recently: in nearly 20 years of MMOing, I have watched 0 videos of encounters. I find it pretty easy to pick up on mechanics. There is really nothing that complicated going on at any time. That said, playing this way doesn't work for everyone, so it's up to the player to decide what way is best and, MOST IMPORTANTLY, most enjoyable for them. You can't really expect people to play a certain way if they don't find it enjoyable, otherwise what's the point in playing? On the other hand, unless you specifically set up a party finder saying to know the fight, you might as well ASSUME there are people there that DON'T. And start accepting - and preparing for - that fact.
I always do my research for multiplayer stuff, but I won't demand it of others.
I've got no problems helping out newcomers.
I don't mind guides/videos of 8-man things, not at all. But my problem with them is that I don't learn much at all from them until I actually see it happening. I learn primarily from doing, secondarily from seeing, so yes, I'll learn a lot more from a video than from a text-based walkthrough. (Text-based ones tend to just stop being informative after a few paragraphs and quickly degrade into [block of grey lines with white lines in between] =/ ) But I won't learn even half as much from a video as I will from trying things out myself and actually seeing said mechanichs in work.
Sadly, the first couple of times when I tried to explain this to my regular group of people, I got two or three of them wanting to be helpful and trying to explain said text-based walkthrough in other words. At the same time. The end result tends to be a splitting headache on my side and irritation on their side because I "won't listen".
And even with guides, you still don't get a concept of the flow of the battle. None of the "ohshit it's phase 3 already!? D:" that tends to pop up when doing the battle for the first time.
With that said, I will still take the effort to watch a video before going into something new -- unless we have an agreement of going in blind the first time. I might not understand much from the video if I don't have a concept of the battle before hand (such as, for example, having done the HM version of the EX primal we're going in to fight), but I'll still take the effort to do so, as it will most likely help me in the end.
It's like a puzzle. Actually doing the fight provides me with the puzzle pieces, but a video can provide me with an outer frame to place said puzzle pieces into. Or something to that effect.
Sorry about the wall of text ^_^
