So it shows that 'pop culture referencing' in FFXIV doesn't necessarily mean films, TV shows, music and literature, but also real events as well.

Popular culture is the entirety of ideas, perspectives, attitudes, memes, images, and other phenomena that are within the mainstream of a given culture. So I don't think events wouldn't be outside of the definition.

Yes! I smiled like a total dork when I saw the "What's on Your Mind" fate and saw the mob name. That's one of my all time fave songs.

Omg that song was stuck in my head every time i played for several months as i was stuck on titan extreme. I would log in and there was that quest right at the top of the list.

Also there's a fate in central shroud called "clever girl". It's a fate with raptors. Referencing the line from jurassic park.
