It's not pointless. That guy wanted to play a little midget and that other guy wanted to play a cat chick. It's an aesthetic choice, and that is what it should remain.
Problem with XIV is stats aren't race based they are clan based. People go into the game thinking "lalafell should have higher mp because taru did" and technically from a stat perspective Keeper of the Moon miqote is better on mp. Now we could all just level past that initial stat bonus. But it would gimp some people, my boyfriend is a Hellsgard GLA, will he be gimped because he chose the more main friendly clan of Roegadyn. Things like they don't want to happen thats why they gave us the opportunity to "level ourselves" but what if the clans had different bonus, Mages clans have more mages bonus, tank/dd clans have more hp bonues, so even if you chose a different clan than your class, its just a bonus, and not an actual thing you have to deal with gimping you from playing classes. In XI it was hard to be a galka mage, but the few who stuck with it were broken (meaning great gear), and could out do a taru mage cause they were trying.
If racial stats will matter I want to change my character's race even more.
there are no plans to get rid of point allotments, I thought they would be affected directly by class rank.
Exactly, in XI (atleast on my server) you'd see plenty of Taru DDs Elvaan Blms or Galkan Whms they were good, and far from being considered gimp. even in XI racial stats really didn't matter much, but XI had a broad assortment of gear. So if/when XIV does abolish the physical level, perchance they will eventually or overtime add more gear to "balance" things out.
Just because you're racial gimp at a Class, doesn't mean you can't play that class as we'll as a race that is "more fit" for it, it just makes you try that much harder to be even, and that there is what gives you the edge
I thought we would still be able to increase what ever attribute we wanted? When has this changed? I was under the impression that Physical Level will be removed and point allotment would fall under when you rank up instead.
Am I wrong about this? Does anyone have any quotes from the development team about a change in the way it works? I'm just curious.
Exactly.
I mean, lore-wise it does make sense. But if Square-Enix is going to charge us extra for more characters (assuming we'll ever have to pay again), then this means I have to pay more to get the best out of each class...
Honestly they really need to drop the extra character charge for reasons in general but that's a different discussion.
Racial stats are great from a lore or purely obvious physiological standpoint. Bigger races should be stronger and have more HP, cat people should be more agile, etc. There's nothing wrong with the average MMO or RPG restricting your class choices to ones that make more sense for the biology (however fantastic) behind the characters.
However, this becomes a massive problem when coupled with the play-all-classes-on-the-same-character mechanic both FFXI and FFXIV have. You're not supposed to have more than one character. You only get one, and you're supposed to just play anything you want to on that one. This means that the game cannot have large racial imbalances, because you are essentially stuck with your one race choice you made when you started the game.
So many times in FFXI someone who had played mage jobs on a tarutaru for years got screwed over a little by the racial stat differences when they decided to finally pick up Samurai or Dragoon. And that's not nearly as bad as the galka who decided to try and play Summoner, or worse, Black Mage. People would barely even invite them to EXP grinding parties. You can't know what you'll want to do five years from now, after your main character has hundreds of completed quests and storylines, with tons of equipment you gathered for yourself, access to elite areas, etc. and there's no starting over to try and get better stats.

Anyone see the cut-scene from Ul'dah story where the twins totally kicked butt and threw those two miners out of the bar. yeah don't underestimate us lalafell ^^
once there gone SP'ing is going to be harder you wont be lv20 with lv50 stats anymore.
the races were different some better in some jobs than other but it was by very little no one cared, BUT the ELITESSo many times in FFXI someone who had played mage jobs on a tarutaru for years got screwed over a little by the racial stat differences when they decided to finally pick up Samurai or Dragoon.
