NPC's in this game say things like "shite" and "arse." Aren't those on par with saying poop?

I always wanted to name one of my lalafells Lily Chaos as a tribute to an FFXI friend I knew. I have no idea why but it seems to not be allowed. And I've searched the lodestone, there are no characters with that name so it's not that it's taken.![]()

I'm not saying you're wrong, and in all actuality you're probably right with this thought.
I just think it's hilarious that they will filter this from being used because of "poop", when the enemies literally throw theirs at you...
"Poop can NOT be used in your LS name because of reasons BUT............................................please dodge that (Stool Pelt) it can be messy

The game regularly uses the term "Whoreson", which you don't have to be genius to figure out the meaning of, as both pieces of the puzzle are there in the word. Also, it are you implying if an NPC said "Poop", you'd be less offended than if you saw a free company named "poop"?
I'd like to dive more into why I think its baffling rather or not people think we care they get offended but again, its a topic that would take me hours to explain. Just go watch some "This week in stupid" videos by Sargon of Akkad on youtube and you'll get a pretty good idea of what I think of "I'm offended so you should change it!" type of people... Which I'm not saying you are btw, so this may not very well apply to you.

Actually, if I hadn't read your thread title and thought "what are they doing to the poor monkey lemur thingies" I'd probably have avoided it. Not because I don't agree, I just haven't run into the filter... accidently, and I'd rather be entertained than shaking my head at somewhat paradoxical and draconian filter issues. It seems this goes far deeper than just simply the word "Opo-Opo" and in hindsight I wish I had titled the thread something to the effect of "Language Filter Issues" purely so more people would look at the post and chime in on everyday words they couldn't use while naming their LS/FC.

The things NPCs say in this game are completely irrelevant to the issue of profanity filter. If an NPC calls you an asshole, do you care? Of course not. There's no inteligence behind that NPC. He's a robot, doing what he's programmed to. But if a PLAYER calls you an asshole? Unless you're very thick-skinned, you get offended. In this case, another human being is insulting you, and that cuts a whole lot deeper than when a programmed robot does it. That is why profanity filters may exist even in a game where the game constructs are foul-mouthed.
That said, overly sensitive profanity filters like those present in this game are just dumb, for the reasons noted in the thread. They're built to try to counter creative types who try to bypass insensitive filters by throwing in spaces and punctuation, but in doing so open up WAY too much restriction against perfectly non-offensive language. The fact that a Free Company can't name itself after stuff like Thanalan is pretty much inexusable.

I actually leave my profanity filter on just for things like this. Every now and then someone will say something in FC chat and a part of the word of parts of 2 words are ???. I find it fun to try and figure out what is censored and why XDThe hilarious thing is that an overly sensitive language filter actually helps people learn new and exciting vocabulary!
In FFXI, my friends and I were puzzled as to why some of our text was being filtered out. I can't remember what the exact words we used were, but it was something like, "Are you co????, ?iros?" The original text was "Are you coming, Eiros?"
Thanks to that, I learned a new word that I never would have known otherwise! Thank you, language filter, for teaching me new profanity!
