All it takes some enterprising crafter (either someone who leveled it a long time ago, or a new player taking up a craft) to realize this and exploit that demand for a big profit while leveling by undercutting those fools until prices are more reasonable.

In the meantime there is no reason you should be buying something at that level that is more than 20-30k gil, in fact some of the stuff you can buy from NPC's for less (look them up on a database such as ffxiv.yg.com), instead try and get some gear from guildleves/sidequests (list of sidequests here) from that new Garlean invasion thing or find a crafter friend you can commission to make the items for you. That is what we all did when we first started the game.
Well let's hope there are some enterprising crafters out there paying attention.

I'd gladly buy a set of lower rank gear from someone - for a reasonable price - if they were willing to craft it. I could hunt down some of the materials as well if necessary. You can see my levels in my sig; I'm pretty much ready for an upgrade I think :-p.

I intend on crafting it myself as of now, but it would be a lot easier to be able to buy some of it outright. Not like I have much use for any of my gil otherwise anyway atm. Though, that will probably change once I start having to get mats for my own crafts...

As for undercutting... Yeah, seriously. Personally, I'm looking to charge lower prices for my stuff once I can reliably craft useful gear, but it's not even with the intention of undercutting anyone; but just to help other newer/lower level players actually get their hands on some better gear.

When I first started out on my original character back at retail launch, my gear was a mix of my own crafts, LS-mates crafting, a few purchases from the MW, and stuff from quests... So it was kind of a mixed bag there. I'll look into those quests, though. Thanks for the link.

    Thanks for the response.

Retarded prices = "I ran out of space and am using the bazaar as extra inventory. If you are so dumb to buy the item, more power to you."

This is what happens when we:

    1. Don't have an AH
    2. Don't have enough gold sinks for the amount of gil coming in
    3. Don't have a cap on trade
    4. All of the above.

I'm not really sure if you retainer disappears once all of the items are sold, but if people think that happens they'll sell stuff for those prices so nobody can buy them and therefor never sell everything.
No, people set retardedly-high price to decorate their retainer, since nobody will buy those stuff, meaning the retainers get to wear those clothes. I'm actually amazed this has been made into a thread on its own, again, and some answers actually miss it all the way...

For those insanely priced items, I always assumed they did that so their retainers would look/be dressed in a certain way (seeing as your retainer can model the equipment you're making them sell) and nothing more. Even the seller should realize no one's going to buy, let's say, a cotton doublet for 1 million gil...
