I fail to see what the fuss is about. People were either being completely delusional or are new to the common day MMO genre to not expect this to be introduced. In no way does it mean this'll ever have to become more than a vanity thing. Various other AAA MMO's have preceeded FFXIV in this. And more will come. Heck, the practice is not even limited to MMO's anymore these days.

It provides extra financing for companies which can be put back into further game development, keeping investors happy and keeping people employed. It's just how the world works.

Why would expecting it exclude being disturbed by it when it actually happens?... People expect earthquakes to happen in Japan, but that doesn't mean they just shrug and move on as normal when they actually happen.

I guess you're right. This was the only MMO that didn't have it and that gave it a huge plus for me. Everytime the cash shop discussion came up on other forums I would always treat this game and SE with a bit more respect, as in they didn't do what everyone else was doing. I'll just not do that anymore I guess.

It actually was. People here say "but everyone else is doing it". The reason why FFXIV ended up a success was exactly because SE didn't do what everyone else was doing when it came to these things.

When 1.0 launched a lot of respect for SE was lost, from me too. Everyone was waiting for SE to do what every one else was doing. Release a sub MMO, it ends up not being that fun and people leave. Turn it f2p and slap a cash shop to it to try and milk as much as you can. That was what we were expecting from them because SE was no better than others. What they did though was unique, they decided to completely remake the game because when a game is not fun is not fun whether is sub or f2p. That action won them my respect back. They didn't do what everyone else was doing.

The other thing was that their game didn't have a cash shop like every one else had. Another huge plus. So saying "everyone else is doing" is not really a compliment. It puts this company into the same level as everyone else in the MMO industry, which does not have a lot of respect from me as a whole.

Yeah, and SE has lost a little respect from me lately, too. I've got no doubt that I will get over this, in the same way I eventually got over the mismanagement of personal housing. However, it will be something I think of in the future when I'm considering whether I still want to play this game.

The money from the cash shop will go more items for the cash shop. It will not go into further game development, look who's being delusional.

Cash shop items usually tend to be simple, vanity item only objects. Nothing more than a model. Often even just a rehash from previous models, with perhaps a little recoloring. Or not even, such as the prior event items they've announced. There's very little funding needed to go into more items for the cash shop.

It is much more likely that cash shop proceedings will go into further game development by Square Enix. Final Fantasy XV has had a long development history, it may use some additional funding. Kingdom Hearts III development may benefit from it. The Tomb Raider marketing campaign can benefit from a more profitable SE. And of course development of FFXIV itself may benefit from it.

It's simply how the industry works. People want AAA-titles with multi-million development budgets for a minimal price. The industry said fine. However, additional proceedings will have to be obtained elsewhere. And vanity + DLC has been shown to be a very succesful and profitable route to take.

Unless the Sleipnir mount provides an in game benefit that other mounts don't, its exactly that. Like every other mount in the game past your company chocobo, its purely vanity.
