Actually you can. There's an option in the menus that it doesn't auto update when you move or do something.

Ok, can you tell me specifically how to do this? I actually miss having the afk symbol available while gathering (nice break ^^; ) and SE posts have already stated on the OF that having the afk symbol while playing is not something they will bring back (I guess I can go post diving for the quote if I have to). I hadn't seen this thread until now. Interesting to see a few people mention "armies" of bots popping in and out of duty. I mentioned the same thing here: http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...87#post2492487 This is on Ultros, yet another world different from the previous mentioned ones. In a later post in that thread, I mentioned that checking the Lodestone will return results of same/similar characters on several worlds. Obviously we can't post names, but I am certainly curious if yours are the same ones as mine lol.

I'll check tonight to see if they're still there, and if so I'll definitely post pics of them here.

Actually you can. There's an option in the menus that it doesn't auto update when you move or do something.

You used to be able to pose as AFK and still be able to play but SE changed it. Now if you have the AFK status and use your keyboard/mouse controls in the active game window, the status is removed.
Haven't seen someone explain how you can legitimately do this yet so we can conclude that anyone with AFK status on and moving around (with an exception being if the character is on follow) or performing actions, is running on automation software.

We have this group here on Balmung who just kill plasmoids in North Shroud. A few FC mates and I(ever so rarely) mess them up by opening trade with their healer after they pull. One by one they die. The bots can't do anything but stand there staring at the plasmoids while being fried. It's beautiful. Of course, after 2 or 3 deaths they slap busy on and become immune to it.

I know a lot of bots persist for a long period of time but I can't help but also suspect that some of those bots come back with the same exact names and character plates when they get banned just to troll the community

SE doesn't delete the characters when they ban accounts. So you can't make a character with the same name on the same world.
