Whats the point in Big Fishing?

Fish-themed vanity to craft ~! Who wouldn't want to prance around in a smelly fish skin outfit? ;P Not even joking >.> Also; aquariums, stuffed fish to mount on walls, fish/aquatic themed furniture.... There ARE options. The question is whether SE wants to put some time aside and look into it more. As far as I remember they said something along the lines of "Aquariums are cool but it's hard to design them" (something about the transparency of the glass, the size of fish, clipping etc.) aaand I "think" they said something about fishing tournaments.... you know, the current fishing records that we have, getting a better use. Take it with a chunk of salt, my memory is foggy :x

The point in Big Fishing is that it's fun. It's a game, in the end everything you do in it is pointless and will eventually be made obsolete by the next patch. Personally, I don't do fishing for the sake of profits but because it's fun and satisfying. Oh, and it gives you that GOTTA CATCH THEM ALL FEELING. If that's not your cup of tea then move on and do something else you like.

Oh don't get me wrong. I do enjoy fishing really much. I just feel like it's not rewarding in a way it should be. Other option would be to have something to go for like.. obtaining "Lu'Shangs Fishing rod" or some other godly fishing rod that you can only obtain once and only once you have actually managed to fish up every big fish in the game. After that you could go fish up legendary fish or legendary fragments of coral or whatever needed for something cool... which is a completely other world with different things, something to keep us busy. I have been going for the achievements on the big fishing log for a while now and it's fun just to go for it even though at the current time you get no reward from doing it

It seems that fishing is nothing but a time sink for those who are interested. You do not make profit of it because the catch rate of the capital fishes is extremely low. I see it as a test of Patience and kind of Lifetime achievement lol.

I have caught half of the capital fish from 2.0-2.2 and none from 2.3. Will I ever get done with them all (87 different)? I seriously doubt it but when I have some time left and do not know what to do, I go fishing for half an hour to an hour. Most of the time I return with nothing, sometimes I have one capital fish less to hunt for.

Getting the Silver Sovereigns for the new items in 2.2 took me almost a month and I had phases where I thought about abandoning it completely because the catch rate of HQ Sovereigns is frustratingly low.

Since 2.3 is out, I tried to catch the fish I need for the Level 75 rod but haven’t caught one so far. All I read is “fish got away” and I have BIS items and max values besides the FC buff that’s not popular in my FC due to me being the only one caring about fishing lol.

Nothing is achieved quickly and if you put fishing in relation to the Miner or Botanist, you realize pretty quickly that SE did not care about balancing them.

And I think they do this intentionally. I vaguely remember a SE statement where they said that Fishing is for complete different folks than the other two DOL and should be more seen as a personal hobby/goal without financial/Endgame interests.

Just compare the time you need for a leve quest for Miner and Botanist to a Fisher leve. Or the time you need to catch the three fish for your daily provisioning quest for the Grand Company to the time it takes to harvest 10 items, even in HQ. Fisher will ALWAYS lose because of the heavy RNG involved.

With the correct bait, you can reduce the number of unwanted fish a bit but still, on your way to get the fishes you want, you will catch a whole lot of different fish that have neither use nor value.

And this is something where SE could do a little fine tuning. Make use of the fishes we can catch. Right now, only a small part of all fishes available are useful. Either get rid of the masses of fish that serve no purpose or give them a meaning.

Meh, Fishing is a collector/completionist class, and any fish that are useful should be considered the exception rather than the norm.

What fishing sorely lacks are actual trophies - there should be tons of craftable trophies stupid titles and achievements associated with these big fish, especially for ones without interesting desynths. Getting all 87 big fish should award the title "Big K'huna" (a legendary miqote fisher `-`) or something equally silly :P

2.38 ninja-buffed CUL desynth. The chances to get the good items from fish used to be 5-10%. Now they're 50-75%. I get a swimsuit/sandals/whatever nearly every time. The last three Spearnoses I had desynthed all yielded sandals. Prices on swimwear are tanking, but I still made 20m in the past week or so from fishing. That's much less than I spent on my melds plus supra. Also, getting the supra had a hidden benefit - I could give my Forager's Rod to my FSH retainer so she can do the XIV explorations (looking for Young Water Lilies, of course, which are very valuable on my server).

Also, fishing is something that takes minimal attention and is something I can do while playing other games or watching anime. I really have no complaints about it, except for the rarity of the tradeable Waterproof Cotton fish. Two full 8h Lone Ripper windows, no bites. Third Lone Ripper window, three bites, zero catches (with max stats). There's been like, two open Sweetnewt windows in the past two weeks (that I've been on for, and I'm logged in quite a lot). Very annoying.

Fishing due to the bathing suits already effects the economy more than they ever wanted fishing to effect it. They specifically made it from the beginning as an activity to do because you liked to do it. It wasn't supposed to be for anything other than that. Bathing suits are the outlier so far and even Yoshi said they won't make vanity items that hard to get from fishing again.

Hopefully, he meant they won't make vanity items that have a low chance to get from fishing like when they were released, not that they won't do more vanity items from fishing in the future. Like, when they introduce new fishing-exclusive items, they keep the desynth yields at 50-75% like they did with the swimsuits in 2.38.
