I agree with your whole Post, except this one.

You can set your bandwidth for Download and also Upload. My Upload never was, with ADSL and now VDSL, higher than 10% of the total bandwidth. Either you do it with Software like netlimiter or dumeter, or you do it with Hardware as in getting a Router which supports TrafficShaping/QoS.

Bingo. Gotta say thanks to this I have next to zero problems with patching.

Using a torrent client is still faster than SE's patcher, though.

Which equals spending money because SE is too lazy to code a proper patcher. Are you volunteering to buy everyone with ADSL a netlimiter license?

I already had one, so no problems for me. That still doesn't justify the bad design of the patcher, which this thread is about, not about workarounds.

Not to mention that a substantial number of players doesn't (and shouldn't need to) possess the knowledge how to do that. Don't forget that not everyone is a nerd like us.

This is somthing that has been a problem since alpha, and dispite suggestions and complaints from the alpha test, SE hasnt done any visible work on the patcher, It is somthing that needs to be fixed and should be high priority because people expect a patcher to deliver patches in a decent time frame.

If the first experiance of a new mmo is that a patch says it will take 7hrs for a 300MB patch they will quit the game before the can even try it

This will be a huge problem when the PS3 version comes out because they dont have any workarounds appart from a new router, which most people will not want to do just to play a game.

I think I heard from a community rep that they want to work on the patcher but I cant remember the details but this needs to be high priority, and I think we should get a rep to tell us where they are on changing the patcher if work has started on it.

Remember to open you ports on your routers folks, it helps TONS to speed up your dl speed for the patch.

The thing is it shouldnt need to be done, the patcher doesnt deliver patches in an optimal manner, the patcher needs work and has done since alpha, but there has been no visible work on it yet.

Some say "I shouldn't have to be a network administrator to download a patch."

I say, "If you don't know how your router or internet connection work you have no business on the internet."

    But that's...you know...my opinion...man.

Oh and lets not forget people that live in university manages accomodation, if thier interenet uses the university network they have no access to any routers, and any administrator would say that the ports arent needed, so we will not compromise security by opening ports for an online game, its what I would say anyway.

Some people for various reasons could have to use mobile broadband (yes the game works on a HSDPA connection) they cant open any ports, these are the sort of potential customers that SE are loosing just because of the patch, and if your ISP blocks torrent traffic the only way to get patches is through somone posting them on the web, which could lead to so many problems.

The fact is there are alot of people who cant open ports for alot of differant reasons and SE will loose those customers, not because they dont know how, but because they physically cant, some people say they shouldnt be an administrator to download a patch, but for some people it will be "I shouldnt be a hacker just to download a patch"

As I said this is a problem that requires immidiate attention.
