Because that amount of money for a simple service like name changing is absolutely LUDICROUS! No really though. It should be $10 like every other MMO out there.
It should just be build in fantasia potion.
Hell wow does it in every single appearance/race/faction change they have so i don't see why its not in the potion.
"Heh, I'm going to name my Roe 'Stinky Farts'. So hilarious! It will NEVER get old!" *Two months later:* "I want a name change. :<"
More seriously, though, the biggest argument AGAINST name-changing is that it takes away pretty much the only form of self-policing available to players: Ostricization. When someone earns a bad reputation, players should have the ability to recognize and avoid them, and to warn other players about them. GMs can only do so much, and there's a LOT of crap that douchebag players can pull off that GMs can't touch. Giving players a method to completely change their identity (both appearance and name) means that players can easily escape a bad rep whenever they want.
If SE is going to implement a name change ability, they will also need to overhaul the blacklisting system; make it so that if someone on your Blacklist changes their name, their entry on your Blacklist also changes. Additionally, it'd be helpful if you're able to tag names on your Blacklist with reasons why you put them there, so you don't accidentally remove them whenever you're purging gilsellers names from your list to make room.
I would pay . . . probably $25 to change my name at the very most. It is Ehayte Feytes, meant to be pronounced "Eight Fates," not "I Hate FATES." I made this character on day one of the game, I had no idea that FATES were a thing.
I neither hate nor love FATEs, but I do hate when people are like, "Hahaha nice name man! I hate FATEs too! High five!"
I support this: just like coming later, we might finally have our FC emblem on the left side of our names (like the new players green sprout) - I am pretty sure they can make a symbol on the right for those who have been blacklisted or having a bad reputation (like PK in other games where your name turns red)"Heh, I'm going to name my Roe 'Stinky Farts'. So hilarious! It will NEVER get old!" *Two months later:* "I want a name change. :<"

I find it costly for my taste to switch server for 18$. Switching back, 36$. Well, that was only to change my first and last name, so it will stay that way for sure ^^
If they would bring glamour sets for specific races and or jobs, they would have my money there instead. Doesn't affect any stats so it doesn't imbalance the game, same for Mounts and Minions <-- Hint for SE, you could make more profits! (I'm sure your financial department would love it ^^)
*I shall wait for the 8-man chocobo..
Exactly! I thought you could change everything with that magical potion.. How wrong we were >.< We've been duped!

I feel for you.
As for the whole name change thing, Yoshida and Co seem to be suggesting that something in the back end is preventing them from implementing the service, which is entirely plausible given the short time frame they had for completely reworking the game. I think at this point it might be easier if they just have it work like a typical server transfer, where you must be out of a FC, no housing, and you lose your friend's list and blacklist. At that point they'd just be copying the process they use to change names on server transfers, which is an already working system. That would satisfy people for the short term while they work on a more long term solution.
But in all seriousness, the idea of changing names would be both annoying and confusing. I once played a game called RuneScape and they let you change your character name once a month for free if you had a active subscription.
It was annoying because everyone would change their name. It was confusing because if you did not keep track of everyone on your friends list you would not know who is who.
The only reason the current method of changing names does not have this problem^^^^^^is because when it happens you lose your friends list. And if who you lost on your list was truly our friend, you or s/he would make contact somehow(even if ti means one of you stalking the known FC house. lol.)
Besides. Your name is part of your identity. You could end up going into Duty Roulette tomorrow and finding some long lost companion you met a long time ago in Duty Roulette. Without your name you would lose experiences like this. Your name is your identity and your character develops with that name.
If I was Square-Enix, which I'm not, I would want people to keep their names so they fit themselves in the community. Not someone who just changed their identity as if they're putting on a mask every time they get bored with their name or it becomes irrelevant over time.
And if you do not like your name then that is your fault. Choosing a name is very important and it seems a lot are not very good at it. I have no regrets with my name except that I wish I did not shorten my first name, Morzone, into Morzy because no one ever knows my full name unless I tell them. And I get that some don't think like I did when I chose this name.. but sometimes we have to live with the choices we make.
And hey be proud of who you are. You made it through this with that whacky name of yours.

In response to Morzy, some people just get bored of their characters and do not have the time to roll a new one. If I value the time I spend on my single character so much and want to experience end game as it happens, making new characters isn't an option I can afford.
Its so you can't be a troll and then just change your name when you get blacklist or worse, maybe you rob an f c and use your phantasia and change your name.
People should have to keep their name, and the reputation they've built associated with it, imo.
Also, pretty much what Morzy said a couple posts up.
