Can't say I like this idea since you'll have to get a specific gear (which will be difficult to get) then level it out.

I'd much rather they do it the old fashion way level up jobs (and increase lv cap) to get that skill. Better yet make gear (soldiery and dungeon) have at least 1 materia slot so that we can atleast have a degree of customization.

Better yet, make materia that increases proc rates, etc.

If anything, I only see it punishing old players. New players will (should be) doing dungeons and getting gear as they level classes (hopefully only green+ gear would get these bonuses), so they will be on par with what they should have gear-wise as they do this. Older players likely have at least 1 class at 50, and would have to downgrade a piece of gear in order to do this.

    Why not use materia?

I agree with using materia. The system is in place expand on it. Make it better then just entree level stepping stone gear.

If they are worried about putting rare stuff on gear. Give us rare materia instead (either from breaking down rare drops or just drops themselves) and open materia up for all gear not just crafted stuff.

Since you asked so nicely, the downside is that you are most definitely going to have specific builds for endgame. That said, I wouldn't limit it to endgame gear but spread it about. Perhaps make endgame gear allow a player to gain multiple traits whereas lower level stuff would give only one per piece of gear.

Let's also keep in mind that this system was not built to continuously grow. Blue magic in FFXI is on a similar boat for the same reasons.

Speaking for myself, I wouldn't mind seeing the point allocation system we have now being revamped to be something along these lines.

    * The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.

I like this system if handled well. It would give us a reason to SB non-convertable gear.

One thing I forgot to mention with my materia idea is they should be slotable based in ilvl of the gear so that you can't just slap on a bunch of materia with pumped up stats and call it a day.

To be fair though, quite a bit of this game's problem is you can get into anything and everything except for coil 2 off the bat..there's no "easing into" most good MMOs have or even a barrier of entry. So it would punish people who join one day then end-game raiding within 6 hours, sure..but it won't punish anyone who consistently plays the game.

The whole: "keeping the game even so people who join 6 years from now will have no problems getting caught up" is holding quite a lot back..way more so than the PS3/PS4 ever will.

Kind of like now, only replace the word "build" with 'Best in slot.'

I like this idea primarily because it addresses the problem of stupidly boring gear selection in some way. I personally don't see 'people wearing lower ilvl gear for longer periods of time because the additional effects are too good' as a problem, but I spent a lot of time in FFXI where certain pieces of gear were BiS (for something!) for years at a time.

Except best in slot is negotiable due to how RNG drop rates work. You can get good performance without full BiS gear because everyone with an ounce of sense knows what it takes to get that far. Stats/perks/traits are different because they're free, and so the mentality changes from "well, you got unlucky and can make do with X" to "X is there for you to use, so why the hell are you not using it?!?!?!?!?!?!?!".

The psychology aspect between the two is very different.
