I'm sorry for your experience OP.
    However....
    Atma is all RNG.
As someone who spent 9yrs in XI, I am very familiar with RNG and just how god awful grinding can be.
However, I wanted the weapon... so... off I went~ atma hunting~
The way I saw it, I had two choices.
Choice 1- I could grind atma for hours, days, or weeks... I could but then, I was reminded a little too much of XI. That and, I would probably get burnt out and grow resentful.
    or
Choice 2- I could take my time. I literally had the same chance of getting an atma every time I engaged in a fate I opted to just take it in passing.

Ok so, it took a bit longer to get all twelve but for me, it was worth it.
I took a rather long break when I got half of the atma and just didn't bother with fates.
Then, slowly, I returned to it.
What helped me was changing zones or just calling it quits after a certain number of fates.
At best, I had three what could be called "Farming" sessions.
They were all short. I went for about an hour or for ten fates then either stopped or changed zones.
Usually the farming sessions didn't yield too much but it was made better by an FC mate coming along.
We ended up chatting a lot as we slaughtered mobs.

    Bottom line. RNG is RNG.
RNG hates us all. It hates us all collectively and it hates us all individually.
Sometimes you have good luck, sometimes you have bad luck.
Yes, it would have been nice to be able to get the Atma to drop faster but it is only one part of the game.
It isn't something I would get angry over or like some, quit the game over.

Reminds me of some fool who is complaining about windows vista when others have moved on to windows 7/8. And stop lying.

Something people need to realize is that when it comes to RNG in an MMORPG, content is generally based on the ease and the reward. If the reward is good/important (but not mandatory), but the means to acquire it is easy but probably long to acquire, it's generally an acceptable method of acquisition. Time has next to no true value on an MMORPG, at least in relation to optional reward derived from RNG.

There's way more to explain on the matter, and really, if you weren't around (or didn't enjoy) MMORPGs either prior to or when they became mainstream, it's a concept that will be very difficult to grasp. It is important though if you really want to minimize any anger/hate one may have to things like Atma. RNG, or the lengthy grind in general, is not an unexpected situation to be in with an MMORPG. It could take you months (see more than one or two) to finish, playing every day for a few hours, and it wouldn't be something surprising to some of us.

OP forgets to mention how many mobs/fates he'd done prior to coming back to the game. I leveled my first 3 jobs through fates back when it was the optimal way to level. I only just got those 2 achievements like 2 days ago and I'm on my 4th weapon. And I've been doing it casually, inbetween farming alex from fates as well. Stop being overdramatic. Its completely random luck and impossible to do 2 fates per minute in certain zones frankly because I've gone 10+ without a single one popping. If you're going to try and post research and factual information, you need all the data and statistics laid out before making a thread like this. Moreso because, as has been said, these threads were made months ago. If you don't like the grind, don't do it. Go do coil and make a Geralts weapon or get High Allagan, fairly simple alternate solution. Or grind mirrors for an i100 weapon. Fact is, unless you're doing top tier content, you don't need more than an i90 weapon to begin with.

Done both atma runs for my SMN book and BRD bow I can say this. Didn't bother going around different FATE spawns, but instead sitting in 1 spot cause usually 1 FATE spawns much faster than the rest....in certain zones. It's around .5%-1% drop rate.

it's all luck, the drop rate is obviously abysmally low, so what you can do is farm fates while doing something else, like watching TV or stuff.

I find that spending 1 to 2 hours a day dedicated to farming atmas easier that doing it straight for 6 hours. If it doesn't drop in the period of time then just do something else, next time you might get lucky.

It's a badly designed quest, that's all there is to it, it's just there to badly prolong rehashed content and keep people subbed in hopes they eventually do get lucky enough to progress with the quest, it doesn't even succeed at being long lasting content because you can technically get them all in a day and all the hoolabaloo about "not all people get lucky just like IRL!" are just empty excuses, as bad of an argument as the quest is implemented really.
