It's an extremely common theme in jRPGs that Ancient Technology is ALWAYS better then modern. To name a few examples: in Chrono Trigger the Zeal Kingdom had more advanced technology. Final Fantasy 5 had ancient Airships and fortresses that were more advanced, Final Fantasy 4 and the Lunar Whale that brought you to the moon.
Final Fantasy 14 is no exception
