    Well perhaps Materia could hold set bonuses, it'd allow the variation in gear but also make Materia more attractive?

    This actually sounds like a pretty interesting concept.

    Conversely, maybe having set bonus items have materia slots to help fill in the gaps for some of that "customization" might help too.
