Which boss abilities deal magic damage?

Hey all,

I'm fairly new to the game, and I've leveled a 50 SCH and WHM, with SCH preferred. One thing that has been bothering me is that I typically use Eos, but I am not getting max use out of her because I rarely if ever use Fey Covenant.

The reason for this is I am not actually sure which boss abilities deal magical (versus physical) damage. As the ability is on a 2 min cd and lasts for only 20 sec, it's definitely something I have to use at specific points in time.

Does anyone know of a website which would have information like this? Boss abilities, type dmg dealt, etc.? And if not, how do I figure out if something is magic damage or not, other than taking the ability with Fey Covenant and then without?

You can try looking at your non-WHM Protect effect.

If the protect shield is displayed when you receive the attack, it's Physical.
If not, it's Magical.

Aside from that, you really shouldn't be 'typically using Eos'. Eos is a last resort when killing things faster is less important than surviving big moves/lots of aoe damage.

I think you may be confusing the 2 fairies. Eos is the healer pet while Selene is the buffing pet

Honestly using Eos for more heals and doing more DPS yourself ends up amounting to more dps than those 2 wimpy buffs from Selene.

Selene works best with full, mixed parties. However, I've slowly come to realize that I can pretty much heal everything without Eos and sticking with Selene. Especially if there's a WHM in the party.

The short version: if you can't block or parry it? It's probably magical. Magical attacks also will never proc Eye for an Eye, and crossclass Virus does nothing on these enemies except waste the Antibody timer for a SCH or SMN.

Stuff on a fight-to-fight basis

Coil
Everything a "node" type enemy does (ADS as an example) is magical. E4E does nothing, Foresight does nothing, etc

Ifrit
M: Nails exploding
P: Incinerate (confirmation needed, been forever since I've tanked this)

Titan
M: Tumult, Weight of the Land, bombs
P: Rock Buster, Mountain Buster, Landslide

Leviathan
M: Everything head does (including Tidal Roar), spumes exploding
P: Everything tail does

Enabling yourself to dps =/= 30% spell/skill speed to 7 other people. In terms of doing more overall damage, Selene is the better choice.

Honestly, the only ones I've ever seen happy about Selene's buffs are Black Mages. Summoners and Bards are completely indifferent to it since it's terrible for them, and Monks and Dragoons just grumble about TP drain. They really need to take a look at Skill/Spell Speed in the future.

That is just peoples inability to understand TP / DPS in long fights, it is impossible for them to being less damage with the buffs on. They just think they are doing less because tp runs out faster. Furthermore if they better manage abilities by TP cost for said cases they can do even MORE damage
