I don't know how people can misunderstand. are we talking about dishonest players here? I mean it's 2014 and in almost every link to the lodestone we could find out a clue or two about a player's background. moreover, it's not exactly rude to ask (outside of RP) if the other person is male/female.
personally, it's not a problem. and I think choosing your character's sex is nobody's goddamn business. this is one of the stereotypes I'm avoiding, it's like you're expected to choose a male character because you're a dude? like you can't wear pink because it's not manly? pfffssh...guess I'll never see eye to eye with people who think like that.

Of course I don't fight dragons, craft rare armor, ride giant chickens, shoot fireballs, save the world IRL. But in video games, I can pretend to do all those fantastical things and more - and that's what makes RPG's fun for me. Essentially as an elaborate means of playing make believe.
And that simple assumption causes a lot of misunderstandings. ^_^

This thread kinda makes me want to use my Fantasia to try living online life as a girl just to see what it would be like . Although my wife might think me [even] weird[er] .
Since I don't play the game to adult-socialize, I don't mind being called by any pronoun, as long as it's not derogative.

Instead of switching to a female character to see what it's like 'living on teh other side', maybe you could change to try re-imagining how you relate to your game character. Have fun ^^b

Correct. It doesn't matter. And as for "misunderstandings," they are just that, a misunderstanding, correct it and move on if correction is required. There's nothing to handle.

It's very rarely a problem with voice chat, and the fact that I'm supposedly fairly masculine when I talk anyway. If I ever get the feeling the other person has the wrong impression, I say something to make it obvious that I am not female but in a non-confrontational etc way so they can't be embarrassed.

Well, one thing to consider is that outside of MMOs, a lot of games still make you play as a male character. There are probably guys that just get bored of it sometimes and play female characters for the change of pace. Besides being a female, that's why I like playing female characters.

I play female characters because I prefer how they look, it's as simple and shallow as that. Well that and they generally have animations that are... I want to say better, but I think the word is, more fluid.
