All mages, crafters, and gatherers have a close ranged auto attack. Just because you took a year [or more if you played 1.0] to notice does not mean they haven't been there the whole time.
Bards[and melee] get an auto attack because all their other attacks do less damage. BLM is more bursty and doesn't need those filler hits.
