That's not at all what it was about, dungeons didn't exist when gear was optimal/favored. By the time dungeons were released gear was already class/level restricted, the old gear was all "dated" by then.

Also, even then it still wouldn't have been a reason to remove the system from the game, just the player from your group.

Though this is the exact mentality that got all the fun stuff removed from the game, so case in point. ^
