Why would that be an april fools joke? That seems like a pretty legit system for a game like FF.

Legit for a main title? Yeah sure. FF7/9/10 had something similar, although only for joke content.
Legit for a Visual Novel? Yeah of course, for some reason Otaku love that creepy stuff.
Legit for FFXIV? Yeah, no.
It's an april fools joke because it directly compromises the integrity of both the characters and the story. Playing "ring around my tail" with Y'shtola would make me quickly lose respect not only for her but Final Fantasy XIV and the developers as well.
You're free to rule 34 FFXIV to your hearts content on the internet...But please, for the sake of even halfway decent writing, leave the Visual Novel crap out of Final Fantasy.
Oh relax. If it *were* implemented, it *would* be decent writing. That's the whole point of why this is a good idea. It would give depth to the NPC characters themselves and depth to your emotional attachment to them, both as a reader of the story and as a character in the story. It's an april fools joke because it directly compromises the integrity of both the characters and the story. RPG romance is really mainstream right now. It's a part of storytelling. Right off the top of my head, I can think way back to when they did it in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. They did the same thing in Knights of the Old Republic II, and in all the Mass Effect and Dragon Age games. It added depth to the story, not masturbation material. On the JRPG side, Persona 3 and 4 did this same sort of idea to masterful effect--they even had this system where, at a certain point in the NPC relationship, the quests branch into 'friends' and 'lovers' paths. Yes, that is Visual Novel type content, but there's no reason it can't be in an MMORPG either. People above have pointed out that The Old Republic did it as well.
I get that you don't want trashy and silly that disrespects the characters. I agree with you there. But I'd love if they did implement it and took it seriously. I think it'd be great for the story and characters. In-game romance doesn't have to equate to waifuism masturbation material.

I can respect this. But i'm in the camp that is just really happy Square Enix is self-aware enough with this sort of material to actually realize it's only really worth an April Fools joke. As much as I question their terrible decisions in the last few years, the ARR developement team gives me hope.
Anyway, i just don't see the XIV characters as the type of ones i'd be taking on romantic Golden Saucer rides. There is no real basis for these types of character interactions, and to just implement them randomly would feel cheap to me.

I don't see where you're coming from about your point, as there are many opportunities to find fulfilment in the sweetness of a romance story with ARR characters. They all have their own personal stories and feelings, and their own feelings and thoughts about your main hero that gives me the idea that they really value you. Something that I could very much see develop into a worthy romance system.
It sounds like 'cheap' is a speculation. After all, we haven't seen an actual romance system, only a joke version.
I really want it to happen pleeeze :3
LOL. Romance is part of human nature. FFXIV characters are no differnt. Of course there's plenty basis for this kind of character interaction. They aren't robots.
