Neither did walking back and forth on the world map, queuing random encounters to level characters and farm items needed.
But it was relaxing. It passed the time while listening to music and socializing with friends, and occasionally something interesting or new was discovered that was overlooked.
For many employments, it doesn't take skill to achieve a paycheck, beyond the baseline. And Repetition makes anything a grind. At least this brings people out into the open world more. Honestly they can (and should) improve on FATEs to make them less grindy. I doubt they will as any further complexity in FATEs pushes into Leve territory, but one can always hope.
