I think the "same type" just refers to the equipmnt slot ( egs can only glamour legs etc). Some of the clarifications in the post are very welcome (like not losing any gear and being able to undo glamours). The level 50 thing is really unfortunate though. I hope too that they will soon clarify the part about "same type". I think we all want the flexibility to have any piece of gear look like any other piece of gear (ex: coliseum shawl that looks like a velveteen coatee). Or has this already been ixnayed?
Because some boots are cloth type and some are leather type, that'd totally mess up everything. I don't think they will restrict it this heavily (if they do, it's very very very limited)
I honestly doubt(but hope that I'm wrong) that S-E think we're that stupid to not realise that. And if they do, I believe the term "equipment slot" would have made things clearer. Type of armor makes me think of heavy, light and robe.I think the "same type" just refers to the equipmnt slot ( egs can only glamour legs etc).

Heavy: any heavy armor that pld/war/drg wears
Light: leather + cloth armor/clothes (shirts, harness....)
robe: anything mage related
But again, I hope I'm very wrong. Or someone is going to burn in the fires of hell! D:

hmm, no screenshot with Dragoon gear, oh well need to wait for patch go live
It was an example.
I could also take the plundered set from the three early dungeons (Sastasha, TamTara, Copperbell) as a glamour set. In fact, I'd planned to for one of my characters. Don't get stuck up on the fact the EXAMPLE I mentioned involved two level 50 items. I've been planning to use my old AF set as vanity since I heard of the system, thus why I used it as an example.
The problem is that why SHOULD it be locked behind 50? Every level range would want to make use of this, there is literally no reason to lock it behind 50 when it's something like VANITY. Vanity systems in other games are available as soon as you get to the first major city. What SE's doing is ridiculous and makes no sense.
The French page gets more specific:
According to Google Translate:L’objet de base et celui d’apparence doivent être du même type (tête, torse, etc.).
Doesn't completely rule out needing things to be leather/leather etc., but it seems more likely it's just talking about slot. The base object and the appearance must be the same type (head, torso, etc..).
Jesus H Christmas people will whine about anything? So what if you have to be lvl.50 to do the quest, were you not planning on getting to max level and just thought you'd stay lvl.30 forever? Grow up, I don't know why you think you need vanity gear at lvl.38 anyways.
Thanks! Indeed the french page makes it clear that it's item slot and not type of armor. That's a relief. Also I know french and that is indeed what it says.

I'm pretty certain that SE said in the past that you won't be able to make it appear that your WHM cloth wearer is wearing plate armor (since they can't do that), but I'm not sure if it'll restrict your PLD plate wearer from looking like they're in cloth (since they can do that, unless it's DoM restricted).
I fully expect there will be restrictions on what you can prism.
It's not a problem for me, but I suppose the bigger question is why restrict it like that? Really no one needs vanity at any level. They might want to look like something else at level 38. What's it to you?
