People tend to remember things as better than they actually were.
Yeah, 1.0 did some things better but taken as whole, ARR is a far better game with much more potential than 1.0 ever had.

Well, it's more than that. The company went into full conservative mode and stuck working systems from other MMOs together to forge the current game. It wasn't designed to be anything new or innovative, but rather what businesses would call a "star" product that can eventually be turned into a "cash cow". The key reason it hasn't turned into a Tortanic is that they also kept a lot of the old game around in it as well. However, with the current direction they are heading with the updates they are ignoring the parts that are keeping the game unique, which may hurt it in the long haul. We'll pretty much have to wait and see how it turns out.
I miss the field themes. Some of sokens stuff is just not complex enough to be called a full song. The town track playing south of dragonhead is just a 50 second loop. Same goes for battle tracks. They are all basically the same song from 1 to 50 in every zone. For an mmo ost that's a pretty unacceptable area to cut corners given how there's otherwise almost 5 hours of music.
I agree on the look of menus too. The old ones had better art direction even if the usability was terrible.
You're also spot on regarding the intro cutscenes.
It's not that they're bad as a whole in arr but it certainly seems like the intro cutscenes especially are some of the least interesting in the entire game and especially if you compare them to 1.0 (epic Leviathan leap says hi)
ARR is lightyears ahead of 1.0 in other aspects but there are a few thing (FEW!) that 1.0 really did do better.
I don't see why they don't re-arrange some of Uematsu's tracks for ARR?!
Ne’er till land consumes sun can sea bear moons,
Heavens spew crimson flame, hells seep black dooms.
Stray seeds quicken in ash’s gray embrace,
Valiant blades forged under the Twelve’s good grace.
Seven waning moons see seven suns rise,
Divine order roils, fallen corpses writhe.
Souls from aether far, strangers from strange lands,
Yester with thine eyes, morrow by thine hands.

For those that want to remember what the game was before this monstrosity called A Realm Reborn. I wish the Calamity would of taken out ARR.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2ahpI7XvlU This alone makes me want 1.0 over 2.0.... The difference in graphics and the way cut scenes are orchestrated is just amazing.. When I watch this vid I just become speechless at how well this is put together. Every opening is just amazing!
I miss the butts... and they are never going to be coming back.
2.0 is left image, 1.0 right image.

I miss the sense of danger in areas with higher leveled mobs. I miss that exploring the map was actually an achievement that took time and skill. And I miss the open world NMs, that dropped neat gear. I enjoy 2.0, but it seems very tame in comparison.
"Cuz when your back's against the wall,
That's when you show no fear at all."
The animation quality in 1.0 seemed better overall, but the UI was hideous and the music was a mixed bag. I'd say the only thing really worth revisiting / salvaging from 1.0 would be any useable animation, since a lot of those cutscenes seemed to be higher-quality mocapped scenes compared to ARR's more cut-and-pasted animations in its cutscenes (for the most part).

"Well, it's no Vana'diel, but it'll have to do..."
There's a lot of things from 1.23 which was when I started playing. I missed out on the game's opening so I can't speak to how it was or wasn't then.
-I miss the old font. The current one is jarring to me after all these months.
-I miss the old music. All of it. The current stuff doesn't hold a candle.
-I miss the openings. They were far more engaging than sit on a cart/boat and make a grumpy face at sudden attack.
-I miss rentable stalls. I'm strange. I don't care.
-I miss the community. I miss people being willing to help people out to get their AF body or to clear Dzemael or whatever needed done. None of this "die once and we kick you, loser" crap that's all over shouts in Mor Dhona and PF.
-I miss the high def textures. It still bothers me that armor looks more like plastic than metal.
Ultimately, it doesn't feel like the same game to me anymore. Realm "reborn" blah blah, but I wish Yoshi and crew had continued down the engaging and captivating path they were on when the moon fell instead of scrapping things that were good and working well. I play to play with my friends, but I'm not madly in love with XIV anymore, alas.
