i will simply say this, we are still close of the city and... what is your Ilevel? i means it's true that the world feel easy when you are in ilevel 80+

and like i have said before, i prefer they work on actual content, than add zone that have only goal to kill us. what the point? none...
they will use time, money and energy for create content that can't be completed... seriously. they already have a very high pace for add content...

let's wait when they will add the first new area how it will evolve.

Ah, but here's the thing - Mor Dohna, for example has always been and will always be "the wild", there may be a new settlement but especially post calamity it should be the most dangerous place in Eorzea as of right now that isn't a dungeon (which are instances so they don't count ever.)

We're "close of the city and i90 max" but there still should be dangers even to those who are max ilvl for now. They did it in FFXI, they did it FFXIV 1.x they can do it in ARR but chose not to because it would "stress players." Castrum near Wineport should be the one of the most dangerous places near civilization considering how technologically advanced the Garleans are ontop of Vanguards are deployed as heavy assault along with Reapers - No single adventurer should be able to topple them like we do, especially within a handful of hits...As the world gets larger, it will still stay safe as that's the battle design of this game. You go from easy to easy no matter the level range.

Sure you can create artificial difficulty and try to kill something 20 levels over you, but even then you still stand a chance because not many even use TP moves. So unless they do a Seeker's of Adoulin style expansion where the wilderness is actually a wilderness and full of dangerous things..it's safe to say the overworld will always be this lifeless.

It is extremely rare for an MMO to be overhauled on every new expansion so the battle balance is set the way it is for the reason of creating 'stress free envrionment' and if they suddenly change that, people will complain and they start to alienate their core audience they wanted.

Cause mmos have gone the way of WoW with its no penalty (don't even try to say durability is a penalty) deaths and easy peasy zones.
Children complain if they have to work for something.

@tupsi: i like ho you twist the lore for make it look like the world around this area must be dangerous.

let's talk of the imperial, the one around are the legion of gaius, they haven't receive support from the empire for age. they was almost as much hit than the city-states, maybe even more. what we have there are the remanant of the invasion force of 5 years ago. indeed them technologie are stronger, but that don't means they can't be beat.
the operation for beat them at the end of the prologue of ARR, was well done and all them head was cut off really swiftly leaving them without any leader nor help from the empire, at best they get reinforcement from Ala Migho... but do it's enough? i doubt it.

now let's talk of something i have said... the ilevel, i invite you to wear your AF (ilevel 50) and go to the sylph territory (by example) and tell me if you enjoy the pain ^^. an ilevel 90 it's almost the double of your level... don't hope to face monster that will be dangerous outside the dungeon where they are buffed for be dangerous. in ilevel 80+ you are a sort of super soldier, over equiped that haven't something to fear from the territory around the three city-states.

mor dhona, i love this part, because this whole area wa distorded by the raise of the crystal tower (soo much that the south part is not there) you have one heavy place of the empire to one side, the revenant toll to the middle and the archeolegy mission to other side. this place is filled with human... is not a barren land like before.

finally, about some stuff i haven't talk about like the size of the area or the monster area filled with higher monster that can destroy you (like the spirit territory with the treant in the v1). let's begin with the size, they try to not waste place for the server. let take the example of some area from FF14 V1, coerthas by example, only 20-25% of the area was actually used by the people... the area was huge... but most of it was empty. because monster was not interesting to kill or no quest or dungeon was around. then, yes, the area of ARR are... small, i admit it... but the V1 was clearly inefficient in term of space use. let's hope the area we will get in the futur be more bigger, but still with interesting and used area.
now about the area with deadly monster, some of this area was used for one-two quest and after, no one was coming into it... because, let's be clear it's a pain to die and you had nothing to gain after you have done the quest. one more time it was a loose of space... asking for bigger server that was most costly for them... leading to cut on the creation of new content or fix of bug.

let's be honest, SE try really hard to offer an experience nice for everybody, not only people full stuff that are bored because... well you must have your own reason. but they need to stay in positive.. a mmorpg is really really heavy in terms of investiment.

then for now we have this, let's hope for later, to have more bigger area, but, i doubt you will see stuff like in FF11 or FF14 V1 like place filled with monster level 90 that was simply OS you when you was passing at 20 meter of them.

MMO vets complain though if their game wasn't designed around 2001 Korean F2P models.
There, i fixed that for you.

People who are complaining about the lack of content have simply exhausted it all. There is plenty of content to aspire to (Coil 1-5, Extreme Primals) at higher levels, but if you've bested it all and can do so continuously, you have effectively beaten the game and literally don't have anything else to do.

Either raise an alt or wait for 2.2. Or take a break...

World size: as I said before, I prefer a smaller but finely detailed (and visually breathtaking) world to enormous stretches of wasteland. Imho the Eorzea open world is a masterpiece of computer game Art. However I guess that the FF14 world is planned to grow in the future.

Danger: I have played several MMOs but none where, if you are at max level with practically maxed out gear, normal open world mobs, or even "normal" elites, are remotely dangerous. Basically, games accept that after all that grind you have gained the "right" to strut around with nobody messing with you, and if they try you teach 'em their manners. The only mobs who can kill you are boss-like elites, and those are found in Eorzea, too.

    Try to solo Svara, lol.

    P.S.
Said that, I am all for secrets, surprises, dangers, open world dungeons (I love them!), am all for fun and adventure in the open world. But I don't like very much the attitude behind many of these requests, it's often so negative. FF14 ARR is a darn good game and we should give a break to SE if, after being so badly burned with the first version, they prioritised the essential features in a MMO game and focused on shipping a polished product. You say it's too like WoW? Perfect! So the foundation is really solid. Now the embellishments can be added.

Look here, I could strip stark nakid and kill everything in the open world. It doesn't even matter if my manbits dangle tantalizingly in the breeze I can still rock the most menacing war machine to be found in the field.

Given how much great ideas and heaps of replies this thread has, it makes me sad there's no reply from the devs. It has become a glaring issue that is so noticeable that not getting a reply speaks just as loudly as not having one does.
