Not exactly. I leveled my PLD in a mix of FATE and Dungeon, and all I can say is FATE, single boss type may give you some practice in holding hate but it doesn't really teach you the more important thing of mitigation and how to manage your CDs. In FATE you have crap load of healers to top you up that you literally can just sit there and do nothing once you have established enough hate. But in dungeons you will learn and actually dodge and manage mechanics and actually think of when to use your CD and how to manage them in rotations, you'll learn how to anticipate big damage coming in and pop the necessary CDs.

This is 1st MMO I have ever tanked in, and it was extremely hard to pickup, because tanking is mostly about positioning the boss, and knowing where to be, and when.

Also it's about knowing the scripted bosses every move. They never change, the only thing that changes in the script is on HP % based fights, if you have slower dps, the script will run through that phases script longer, then swap to the next scripted phase.

It does get rather ridiculous in Titan EX/Garuda EX/T4 and T5 for tanks. No way you will get anywhere near beating unless you wipe a few times and learn the fight (assuming you watched vids).

You will want to bash your head at times because of the steep learning curve of tanks in this game, but never give up and you'll prevail.

Learn from your mistakes. Then learn to put them behind you. Regret and embarrassment will get in the way of being able to tank or heal as the situation demands.

and when you dont have healers? guessing youve never done a fate with less that 6-7 people. its basically a mini dungeon if you are all in a party. yes, when you just do the well known fates you dont learn as much. but there again lies looking at it less as a pew pew instance and more of an opportunity to learn. And really CD rotations dont really come into play until endgame or very close to it. And those you would still have to figure out when you get there or read a guide to know when and what to pop.

Tanking is not intimidating, please don't be put off by the way some people act towards tanks, if you play your class right you'll get no trouble from anyone, and if you mess up and it's an honest mistake and people bitch at you just ignore them, they are stupid people who have probably never played a tank job themselves. Don't let them get to you, they are online people who will have no effect on you. Nothing to be scared of. The worst they can do is leave your run at which point they will be replaced and you can move on with a new, hopefully more reasonable, party member.

If you make a stupid mistake or simply don't understand what you're doing just apologise and ask how you could improve (if it's not obvious) and hopefully someone will know the tank role and be able to help you out.

I remember my first time main tanking Garuda hard. I'd been the off tank up til then but I'd watched the main tank so I generally knew what to do. The run was going fine until after the tornado around the middle.. I pulled Garuda North... Needless to say there was lots of running round like headless chickens followed by a wipe. The group went wtf happened? Tank pulled north. I just said "sorry first time main tanking didn't realise there was a particular direction you had to go". Group nicely said SW is generally fine. We tried again and everything went smoothly. Even if some people are being dicks you'll have at least that one person who says "SW is fine". Focus on them ignore the rest and try again.

If you want to be a good tank - run each dungeon twice. You won't get to Lvl 50 as quickly, but you'll know how to play your class when you get there.

Yes I've done enough FATEs and sometimes I'm in a party with only 4 people.

Maybe I'm just lucky. When I leveled by PLD, there are many times the FATE party I've joined doesn't even have a healer. But when I MTed FATEs like Svara/Roc of Ages/Saint's Wake, there are lots of other party's healers healing me and throwing me stokeskins too.

Maybe your personal experience is different, but for me I don't feel I've learned much from FATEs (not say nothing at all, but maybe not a lot and really significant).

I started GLA/PLD in this game, with no prior trinity experience. I haven't hit 50 yet, and I've only tanked as far as Garuda, but I haven't gotten any grief from other players.
