I played FFXI for 8 years before I got bored of it. I feel like there was more variety, excitement, danger, more to explore, areas always had a reason to go back to them, unique and fun jobs, amazing story.

I agree that the content in this game feels too similar. Dungeons may look different and aesthetically pleasing, but they all feel the same. Even the jobs don't feel unique enough. I can't say that there's any one job that I love playing. The story is very lacking - I feel like I may as well be chit-chatting to NPCs about the weather. Where's the danger and excitement?

It's a little discouraging that I'm getting bored of this game so soon. I don't exactly have high expectations for a game. I just expect to have fun. I'm still playing (for now) because after playing FFXI, I know that SE can make an enjoyable MMORPG. I'm just waiting to see if this one will be.

After eight years, FFXI had had at least three expansions along with major content additions roughly every three months. Folks were kept occupied between expansions by making the various grinds very slow - you could exp in a hardcore exp-farming party for an entire evening and only get half a level at higher levels, you could do Dynamis for years before getting that specific drop you wanted, etc.

FFXIV is young, and more than that it is FAST. After so many years of FFXI, people have become tired of the endless grind. SE caved to these desires to stay competetive, and as a result, content wears out faster than SE can keep people engaged with new content. There's still a grind, but it takes about a tenth the time it did to do anything in FFXI. A greater number of people are able to finish all each expansion has to offer, LONG before the next expansion comes.

I'm torn as to whether this is good or bad. For a semi-casual player like myself, who plays each week with VERY casual players, it's nice that we can get so much done in the four hours or so a week we play together as a group. For more hardcore players who prefer to devote a lot more time to playing, it's easy to see how you can run out of things to do in much shorter order, especially if there's content you simply don't care for, like Gathering or Crafting.
