Back in the days, using outside sources such as the website gamefaqs to beat single player games or find out "secrets" was analogous to cheating.

Wikis and other websites "DUMB DOWN" current content by already handing you the answers to which the first groups were forced to learn on their own. If you are against SquareEnix dumbing down the old content, you better not be a hypocrite by dumbing down the content by using websites to get information you didn't manage to find out on your own through the game itself.

The PoV is rubbish, you would not be posting this if you really were against nerfing content. At best, this is a poor attempt at devil's advocate. People have always shared information about video games, that's what happens with information, it spreads out over time. If you want to compare the spread of information with the actual changing of fight mechanics that are akin to a nerf, then know, you make a lousy point. Knowing before hand that a mechanic does x, y or z, does not make executing the fight any easier. Changing the fight to buff your HP and DPS every time you wipe makes the fight easier to accomplish.

I think most people are angry about the echo buff AND the removal of lockouts. People expect old content to become easier. Removing the lockout and making content easier is a bit overkill.

Yes I did, outside of one exceptions with Twintania because I watched BGs kill video for Twisters. I can also tell you I have completed mostly everything this game has to offer, and I have never been more bored.

This. I'm not sure if dumbing down is the correct term, but what fun is it to walk into a big boss
battle knowing EVERYTHING that's going to happen beforehand? How dull.

I honestly cannot remember ever watching a video for anything in XI before heading into battle.
Same goes with XIV. It takes all the fun out of it IMO.

But... to each his own. I personally prefer running in and figuring it out as opposed to watching a
Garuda Extreme video 20x and getting the exact memorization down before I even enter in game.

You are confusing Cheating with Learning. Watching a video or being told how to do something does not constitute for actual in-game experience. Going to Game FAQs for a tip on how to solve an issue that may hinder you is not cheating, getting the action replay/Gameshark code or save file is. It's no different than you and a friend buying the same game and you getting stuck and s/he telling/showing you how to get over that hump.

Would you jump up and yell "You're dumbing this game down for me!" or "Thanks!, that really wasn't that hard now that you showed/told me." ?

Players have been teaching other players how to excel at games way before the internet. The major aspect of any battle in game or real life is knowing what you are walking into and being able to adapt under any situation. Also Learning curves require some people learn through different methods like visual versus verbal or constant failure. Another major point is that fights rely on reflexes and memory more than actually adapting to a situation which already dumbs-down the content since the fights are heavily scripted. This is the only mmorpg where when a boss reaches a certain phase you can call out every move verbatim and people still fail.

While I haven't beaten Twintania yet I can say the difficulty level of the content is fun not frustrating as it is.

I have to agree with a point of the OP.

Never in my life did I see all these videos and what'nots out there for end game content until wow. It's sad really, people cant figure thing out for themselves anymore and that was the biggest reward for beating content. Shame

The reliance of the player base on player made strategy guides is due to poor design decisions on SE's part. A truly hard boss fight including moves that can instantly wipe your group would at least have a pre-fight or some cutscenes elaborating on the ability before throwing the players into it. The challenge should be based on the player's ability to react fast enough in response to the attack, and not based on get surprise one-shotted by an unforeseen attack and getting one shotted again by yet another ability he has later. Unfortunately, they chose to copy that game design to artificially lengthen the game.

It would have been nice to see them do something creative with the multiple job system for end game encounters or did something more player driven. I'd prefer the chaos of an adventurer made town that gets assaulted by crazy stuff regularly than deal with the community fallout that these WoW-esque encounters fuel in the community.

i took 2 random strangers i met in wineport into coil turn4 yesterday. they went in on their first run through and won. yes, we did wipe quite a few times before we got the clear first, but it felt good for those that went into it for the first time being able to help them. without the one week lockout i could see me doing much more of that.

Tis the generation of gaming we're in now. Everyone thinks they're important enough to stream what they're doing in a game. They're bringing this feature to the next generation consoles. Why would I want to watch a stream of a guy playing a game while I'm playing the game?
