That's kind of what I was spitballing with that bit between the hyphens. I was saying it could be a point accrual system like commendations, not an extension of commendations.500 commendations is the Gold Magitek Mount. 2000 Commendations for another? Don't see how Commendations would get someone to play a tank more often. There is a guy on my server who had the gold magitek the 1st few days after 2.1. Burning Guildheist isn't helping the community, we need Tanks in other areas of the game. So Commendations wouldn't be any good. Lets hope its instance runs.
Maybe if it was an achievement for 300 level 50 dungeons on a Tank then maybe it could work. Cause that's a lot of dungeon runs ^^.

The real problem is that there really isn't that much variety among tanking classes. PLD and WAR have their differences, but the basics are the same. "Keep hate, get healed, stay alive." There are few people that I know who play BOTH PLD and WAR, even though the classes share gear, because the experience is essentially the same. It just comes down to your preference for a shield and sword, or a big fat axe. Combine that with a much wider variety of play styles among DPS classes and the solution is obvious.
There needs to be at least one more tanking class with a play style totally different from WAR and PLD. Either a Ninja like tank that mitigates damage through evasion and counter-attacks, or a magic based class that mitigates damage through defensive and reflection spells.
I still think SE needs to keep their promise to introduce Musketeer next, but it would be a huge boon to the community of they could fit in another tank at the same time.

Yeah that wouldn't work to get people to play tanks, only to level them. That said, why don't so many people play tanks? I know some say they're boring, but that's just... wrong. War is amazing when played right, being able to set the pace and being the main bad A taking all the hits is fun!
I think a way to get people to play them would be to either introduce a new tank class, double/triple gil rewards for 'adventurers in need', and maybe a lil QoL for stuff like bloodbath and foresight.

You need an incentive to play tank because it is:
A) more difficult
B) less satisfying for a majority of people
C) more responsibility
When DPS go to titan if they fail to dodge they got flamed, a tank has to dodge in nearly almost every instsnce or they will be met with the same consequences.
I've occasionally been a surplus tank on titan HM and I always find dodging trivial because I'm so used to it.
Being able to abuse in progress withdraw and get adventurers in need bonus and farm at the speed of light should be good enough incentive for players to play tank.
Maybe they should give a Tank job to some DD so even if they don't want to lvl another tank they might play it to get faster in dungeons.

Giving a mount to tanks for a "shortage" is kinda bs. They already get added benifits from DF and people commendate tanks left and right.
They should not be given something specific to their job or role that only they can obtain. Your forcing players to play a tank just for a mount... Yeah forcing because if you want said mount... You must play tank.
I got 300 philos in like 10 mins doing Main story dr.
I got 50kish xp, 275 gil, and seals for queueing into a low lvl dr last boss.
I got my hl dr done quick.
CT- skip the parts you don't like.
Instant parties.
How is that not enough? You farm as fast as you want and get instant parties.
If all that isn't incentive enough then there's something wrong with the role itself.

I'm not saying its not enough for me, its apparently not enough because the devs are discussing how to make more people play tanks. Because there still is a shortage. I don't know what you're doing, but main story missions take like 30-40 mins, I don't speed run. Also there is literally not a single thing for me to spend philo on that I need, all my classes are in DL or better and I've bought all the Oils I'd need for my last two relics. Seals are worthless, I've been capped for months with nothing to spend it on. Exp is worthless, have all my stuff capped. 275 gil ain't worth low level DR, I haven't even bothered queuing up for it. CT q doesn't show progress any more so no fishing to those that did (I didn't as in progress parties in CT are always fail).
So the only thing tanking is good for is instant parties. yay. Not that that's bad, instant q's are amazing, I don't think I'd be able to continue paying if I mained a dps class.
Its just plain to see that they need to do *something* more to get people to play tanks.
