Eorzea feels like a world with no teeth.

I don't fear the world, there is no where I can't travel on the back of my trusty steed and and be afraid I might die. As I ride through the beastmen strongholds I look down on the pitiful attempts these insignificant creatures make to harm me. Their blades and arrows bouncing off of my armour with little or no consequence.

In 1.0, even at max level, to get to the stronghold boss you needed a party, and wiping was an option if you didn't carve your way through fast enough. I remember travelling to the far out of the way aetherite points to collect the exploration achievements and having to sneak past level 75 - 99 mobs. In XI travelling into any high level zone unprepared (sneak and invis pots) you were gambling with your life.

I personally felt this level of danger gave the world character, gave me a sense of adventure. I felt in awe of the world, I feared and respected it. Right now I just look at it with a sense of indignation, and contempt for the pitiful enemies who think they pose me any sense of threat. Even the imperials have been reduced to a dog that is all bark and no bite where as in 1.0 the imperial stronghold was deadly!

    Totally adorable and appropriately relevant.

I was just doing hunting log for my monk in Castrum and was feeling a bit silly, raiding over the place with my chocobo. Because an adventurer and a chocobo can take over a whole imperial stronghold, no problem! Didn't help that the imperial soldiers were very far apart from each other, so it was pretty easy to just "sneak" past the ones I didn't need for the log.

I will forever remember from LotRO the lvl 30-40 orc camp that I had no hope of soloing, duoing or even trioing. Would need 6 people to get around the place. Unless you were a stealth class, ofc, but even then it was far from quaranteed you'd survive even a 1vs1 fight.

    Just sayin'. ^^

If you tried to do this in 1.2x you'd become the laughing stock of your entire server trying to think you were awesome only to get your body smeared all over the place and left for the wolves in the caves.

Those Magitek Vanguards were the bane of your existence if you didn't leash past them for the storyline mission. They didn't fall over like a tinkertoy like they do in ARR. Eorzea is a world without teeth because people would complain it's "too hard" to do anything if they...wait for it....actually had to fear for their lives.

And now people want the reverse. If I were a dev I'd be pulling my hair out.

There seems to be too much of this in ARR's direction vs 1.23. They changed so much that didn't need to be.

Everything in the game now feels like a theme park, and not in a good way.
    • Elaborate prop-like environments with virtually no open spaces for roaming or nature.
    • Blatent/overt game mechanics that have no tie to story or lore - (try to imagine why a Boss monster would fight in an arena with structures that have no purpose but to nullify it's most potent attack)
    • No sense of danger in the world, all paths are safe and have virtual guard-rails.
    • Queue up for your favorite ride/game and repeat until you get enough tickets for a flashy prize - rinse, repeat.
    • Crafting and Gathering are side activities which are flooded with virtually useless trinkets.

Furthermore, the devs act as if player 'stress' is something to avoid at all costs - rather than a spice which when used properly, makes a very flavorful game. By doing so they have set expectations among the player base that everything should be easily obtained. This expectation causes players to get irate when met with any delays to progress, and contributes to a toxic community.

I'm really looking forward to Dark Souls II more than I ever thought I would -- if just to play a game that actually feels immersive and where the rewards are actually earned and meaningful.

Actually a lot of us (sorry I shouldn't assume) I was quite happy with where the game at 1.2x bar a few major flaws in the architecture of the game system that limited what the developers could do. But mechanics and world environment difficulty were at a comfortable place. I thought I was supporting the game through it's '1.0' period for more of the same. Still FFXIV is a nice enough MMO I suppose, but this is definitely one of the chief complaints I have and would love to see changed about the game world.

LotRO. Good times. That trend continued all the way to the last content I played. I think it was Riders of Rohan. Exploration meant a lot in that game and taking the wrong turn may very well end up with fangs all over your innards. *cough level 20 no death achievement*
