MMORPG stands for Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. That just means there is a massive number of players and doesn't say anything about the world itself.
That being said, yeah, the zones are rather small. PS3 limitations, probably.

1) Strangely, other companies like Bethesda don't seem to have this problem. Zoning inside a town is okay (in my opinion), but in free wilderness...
2) And even if - nobody forced SE to release the game for a potentially platform which has been known to be dying and being replaced since 3 years. Reminds me a lot of releasing FF XII for the PS2 when the PS3 was already out.
