While i agree that the system in FF XIV is flawed, the one in FF XI was even worse.
Sorry but imho FFXI is one of the worst MMOs i have ever seen ( a pity because it also had the nicest community i seen).
FFXIV is flawed to bits but i still enjoy it more than XI, changing the game system to ressemble the XI abomination would be terrible for me.

While FFXI wasn't perfect, and I came and went a handful of times every time I jump on XIV, all I think about is XI. There were so many things (GOOD things) they could have implemented into the game from the start. Chocobos even? I don't know if they were available when XI was released, but I was expecting XIV to at least match it's predecessor. I wasn't expected it to be the same game, in fact I was beyond annoyed by the similar races. I got over that and hoped at the very least they would add gender counterparts of the mithra & galka. Of course not. Now that seems to be where similarities end (Unless you look at cities like Gridania, which is more annoying getting around than Windurst). There's no auction house, no airships, no mog house... Instead we didn't get any of those, or crap ass substitutes that just don't function as well. So I'm one of those people that are happy to see physical experience going away, jobs reintroduced (hopefully in the NORMAL FF MANNER), and auto-attack system and all. Jumping seems to be unnecessary, and more work than just enabling the ability to walk over a ledge you thought you'd already be able to walk over...

As far as grindfest goes, it had it's place in FFXI because that was the fastest way to level. People didn't do it to interact, they did it to level fast. The interaction comes with the title of MMO. You can surely interact when you decide to do guildleves with people, behests, etc. And while you certainly could solo your way to the top, the option to get there faster with people and interact is still there. The chance to interact is always there, and you can choose not to interact even if you do things with random people. I don't recall making dozens of friends because of grinding, it was because I chose to interact with certain people in any instance.

    Why limit the options?
Why not let everyone decide for themselves and put all of them in the game?

Erm...leves are help wanted ads for basic, everyday things that need to get done. There's not much to them from a content standpoint, though as I constantly say, they are backed by the lore.

    * The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.

I have no idea what you're trying to say. Whether they are day to day "ads" or side quests or backed by lore or otherwise, the only point I was making is that they are no better than straight out grinding and are even more boring since the bulk of them take place in single regions. And just how many times do the dodos attack the ghost farmer's crops before it gets old?

it doesn't matter what form of grinding you do it will get boring. if i go out and farm raptors after a few hours i am bored with it. if i do leves everyday i get bored with them. if i do a quest everyday i get bored with it. if i have the option of multiple ways to level then when i get bored with one i can go to another.

repeating anything too many times gets boring over time. the difference between xi and xiv is not the grind is better, but there were multiple options of how you can go about leveling for comparable sp. some of this was xi was better when it got to the us than this one was released. other parts of it is by now xi has has multiple updates and expansions.

I think majority of people grinded in XI, I'm talking vanilla XI because I wasn't around post FoV and Abyssea and all that, so there really weren't many options. I'm not asking for the options to go away but grinding off mobs should be a little more plausible an option and leves shouldn't be so OP, they are repeatable quests, if the game is built around them nothing will save it.

    Guess why?

Because grouping with people is fun. Having to talk and interact with people is fun.

Running around in a blind group face first into mobs is not fun. At all. Not even a little bit. My fingers hurts from spamming the same ability over and over.

I play MMOs to socialise and talk to people I would otherwise not be able to, FFXIV does not fulfil that. Me and my friends are still logging into XIV every few days to do the guildleves we have the same for Wells and roll them over to the next reset, because it's the only way we can play together for an extended period.

Other than that, we all decided we'd prefer to spend our time actually gaining experience and being able to play together in XI.
to op yes! and this post explains it perfectly... MMORPG's should be played with others grouping is fun and if u wanna play solo when u can casually why not play an offline rpg, my understanding was that an mmo's strongest feature was its interaction with the community and enjoying the exp with friends.

P.S. I always had fun in my grind parties and thats where all the gear you aquired from the work you put in as a group with your ls shinned because u could really own in a exp/merit party.

Yes to exp parties grind doesnt automatically mean boring to most that played XI, but with leves wow its the most boring way to exp i've seen yet in a mmo...

If some devs out there grasped this most essential truth, they could come up with a wow killer.
    I agree with you 100%

for me grinding was always boring in FFXI, however the rest of the world and the goals, and the rarity(oh yeah finally not running around my moogle!) made it worthwhile, i was doing a boring task to get more powerful to get cool abilities and skills and see what the game had to offer. The problem is this game hasnt had content for two too long, they need to jazz it up, wheres the bosses, cool loots, fancy weaponskills, interesting terrains, and quests. This is whats going to make grinding rewarding, being able to get/do/see more cool stuff.

Its exciting when you get big exp numbers, and then you can actually do something cool, not so much when you are getting it just to get it.
