SE has said you can cancel leves in order to maximize SP since you don't get a reward of gil or faction points. I think saying that pretty much implies they designed it to be that way. You can abandon to maintain the same leves, link the same leves and gain the same amount of SP every 36 hours. In fact, the 36 hours exists so you can't do this all day long! You have a good 3 hours then must wait a day and a half.
