I understand to an extent, but 1-50 is easy. There's nothing inbetween that should be a barrier to anyone. They can't have everything go their way.
CoP was the best thing about XI content wise, before they ruined it, twice.
The way i understood it was that it would be a 'story' in the same way the HM Primals were introduced via a 'story', mainly just to explain why we need to kill them a third time, and why they're stronger now.
though not required to advance the Main Scenarios.

I see people talking about CoP and I have to say that was one of my favorite expansions.
I posted the quotes from SE that made this clear here: http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...ore-elite-only

The way I've interpreted, is just like it is for the Coil. The main scenario finished after you defeated Gaius. But, the world is still going on, it's not a console game that once you complete the main story you're finished. Since it's an MMO, the world doesn't just stop, you've stopped This threat, but there are others out there, like a domino effect. Topple one power, another one surges up in it's place. Plus, the Ascian are still around and if you watched the final cutscene, there are A LOT of them. One or more of them can easily be part of this Primal Extreme thing.
I believe the small screen change during the letter more or less explains it. 'A Realm Awoken'. At the end of the main story, Bahamut stirs, upon his awakening, the Beast Tribes began to gather mass amounts of crystals to resummon their Primal deities after what the Garlean empire did to them. It's possible that whats happening to the Primals now is not related directly to the Beasttribes but is more related to Bahamut and the 'other' Primals that are mentioned.
Because one of the Ascian makes the remark that Bahamut has awoken and before long many others will begin to stir as well. So there's more hiding out in this world than we know about.
We know about Leviathan already, Shiva and Ramuh. But Yoshi-P already said he intends to bring a lot of Primals in, some that we 'cant even imagine'.
So the new content surrounding the Primal Extremes, even the Hard mode dungeons, could be tied to the Main story in the sense that we're trying to keep it protected and fight off the new threats as they come. And as I mentioned before, it'll get progressively more difficult as time goes on, because with every failed attempt to destroy us, the bad guys behind the scenes will try harder to succeed.
It's part of the main story just like the hard primals and coil is part of the story. What is so hard to understand? There are quests to begin each of these contents and even story cutscenes in coil. Why is it so hard to wrap your head around the idea that the main story does not end with the main scenario quest?
Gotta wonder what the story would be for this.
"Oh hey, you just defeated Titan? Well, guess what! Ifrit's back! ...again!"
Anyone remember DBZ where Frieza would spend like 3 episodes transforming and all the heroes just sat there like "Man, that guy is steadily gaining power! Let's sit here and do nothing and act surprised later that this happened". That's pretty much how I feel about HM and EM Primals at this point.

I say we eradicate al beast men so Titan wil never come back ever again. oh and there will be no more garuda or ifrit, either.

They said they did set a Storyline for them and that they will continue the Mainstory. But i don't remember hearing that Extreme Modes are actually parts of the Mainstory and have to be beaten to continue.
