Do we have to have the best gear?

Got into a debate with an FC mate about future story content. The FC mate thinks everyone MUST have the best gear, so raiding is a must in order to progress whatever future story/expansion comes out for the game.

However, given the current MMO market, I disagree. This game seems to cater to the casuals who want some challenge, and the hardcore. And given that all current MMO's on the market don't require people be hardcore raiders to continue the story of their game when an expansion comes out, I'd like a definitive answer.

Do we have to run coil and such, and get the best gear when new story content comes out?

Also, is running the primal HM's story intros required to progress the story?

Well, that's the thing, Coil is the next part of the story. Sure, later on they will nerf it so those who couldn't complete it prior can then complete it. And we don't know if it will be required for new stories that come or not.

That and once people can get the gear from crystal tower it will be easier to do coil.

I'd go ahead and assume for each addition to coil yes you will probably need to have quite a bit of gear to make advancement into it. However unless they add more content for the top percent of players doing coil then it's pretty safe to assume the best is not needed no matter what Mor Dhona goobers think.

Firstly it's Crystal tower > Coil.
Crystal tower was meant to be out on release though was held back.
Gear progression will always be a thing, try running coil in AK gear, it just won't happen.
That's the kind of difficulty you're looking at, gearing up makes things a while lot easier and efficient.

Yeah it's supposed to be iLvl 80 drops. Content is probably going to be aimed at an average iLvl 60+

lol O. Then yea my statement stands, once people start clearing Crystal Tower than Coil for them will be twice as easy as it is now.

The iLevel system is already absurd and is just going to get worse. When level cap is raised, instead of getting those level 55+ pieces of gear, we're going to already be way beyond even iLevel 100+

I don't know, just a thought. I realize the iLevel is just a referential number, but it does seem a bit silly.
