The case does seem pretty closed with Bahamut (thanks for that great screenshot, btw), but I'm starting to wonder if this theory was correct incidentally and in spite of why I originally started the thread... I don't see any blatantly technological contraptions applied to either the sea serpent of Limsa Lominsa (rumoured to be a Thalaos), or Midgardsormr...

Twintania's neck shackles remind me of the dragon-type enemies from FFXII. See http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Shield_Wyrm and note the bestiary description.

Their last ditch effort would have been to lock him up and shoot him into space, ala Dalamud, but it likely came too late and their empire collapsed entirely shortly after.
What I dont get is that in the last cutscene they say Bahamut is healing himself in the coil. Does that mean that the Coil was setup by the Allagans to aid Bahamut ?

XIV borrows a lot from XII.

Hmm... let's throw some small-talk on the pyre, shall we?

The Allagan Empire reached its peak during the Third Astral Era. Dissatisfied with dominion over Eorzea alone, this thriving civilization sought to expand its borders to ever more distant lands.
Eventually, the empire cast its avaricious gaze upon the southern continent of Meracydia. The peoples of these nations did not, however, take kindly to being invaded, and they summoned the primals to repel the Allagan forces.
Hard-pressed by these incarnations of elemental wrath, the leaders of the empire's military were forced to alter their tactics. They ordered the mages under their command to devise some manner of magic with which to counter the primals,
The magic invented by these arcane pioneers met with great success, and, within the Allagan Empire, the title of “summoner” earned the bearer an uncommon measure of awe and respect.

This is the first time I've actually watched the scene as opposed to just reading transcripts people post, so let's get a few new observations in.

    • Louisoix might not be alive after all; he speaks but no words come out, and by his side is Nael van Darnus, who has been confirmed in no uncertain terms to be dead. They may very well simply be drawing on the power of the aether to manifest themselves, as A-Towa-Cant did in the White Mage job quest line
    • Alisaie mentions that the devices control the saturation of aether and then awakens it by circulating aether around the room manually.
Now, I've been quietly doing a lot of work interpreting the fragmented and incomplete Version 1.0 story, so I might just be letting those efforts bleed through, here, but in the same scene we have mentions of aether concentration, dragon armies, and the Battle of Silvertear Skies. In Version 1.0, it is implied but never confirmed that the Key, the horn, muddles with the aether and drives monsters mad with it. Additionally, Y'shtola realizes what's going on when she reads the Rhotano Bloodcant table, but all she says out loud is, "of course, they will use it to summon an army."

Is it possible that the Ascians knew that Gaius was going to move on Mor Dhona and planned, after capturing it, to prevent it from being used as a source for the summoning of primals, so, in order to prevent this (because the Ascian plan requires primals to be summoned en masse), they used the horn to awaken Midgardsormr and summon the dragon army to fend him off?

What the horns were for and what the serpents of the Twelve are are basically my two biggest mysteries to solve at the moment.

i thought that was who i saw. i have no reason to believe lusioux is alive if that is him...

but why is he there? did his essence get absorbed by dalamud after the 1.0 players defeated him? and if he is there, why would he team up with lusioux? seeing as how they were mortal enemies five years ago, i don't see how dieing would change his outlook.

and i think that lusioux speaking and no words coming out was there to emphasize that we and alisaie are really far away from him. he probably was talking in a normal tone of voice, so we wouldn't hear him anyway.

After you defeat Nael the first time in 1.0, he gives himself up entirely to Bahamut, and when he dies you see Dalamud absorb his aether (I assume that means Bahamut owns him). Since Bahamut is still alive it's entirely possible that he's keeping Nael's spirit around as a bodyguard. As to why Louisoix is in there, I can only imagine that maybe he and Nael are vying for Bahamut's fate: Louisoix obviously wanting to return Bahamut to the Lifestream, and Nael is trying to resurrect Bahamut. To that end, I can imagine those of us who never played 1.0 will get our shot to fight Nael van Darnus towards the end of the Coil's story--mostly likely as a prelude to a fight against the Elder Primal, himself.

Or perhaps Bahamut's simply locked both of their souls in the Coil and they're stuck just thinking to themselves, "Well, ****."

Keep in mind that we never met who Nael van Darnus really was. By the time he came to Eorzea, he'd been absorbed in the will of "Almighty Dalamud" for ten years. Who's to say how much of him represented the "real" him. There's a chance that the Nael beside Louisoix is the true van Darnus freed. I suppose we'll have to wait and see...
